Ok, I picked up magician again a few months ago and have been going through
the entire series again. I am currently in the middle of Rise of a Merchant
Prince. So far, this has been one of my favorites since I am a "student" of
business. I have always found commerce fascinating. Anyway, since I have
gone from one book to the next, I think a few more of the details stand out,
mostly, what happened too...(i.e. Anthony and Margret, Guy du Bas-Tyra,
Nicholas and his last flame, etc.) Are there any plans to have some short
stories to possibly fill the gaps? I would not expect a complete novel, or
a "prequel", but why not some sort of short story that gives some of the
details that could not be put into the other books? I blame Ray for making
such lovable and memorable characters.

Two short pieces, The Wood Boy and The Messenger, have already been
written, under the rubric, "Tales of the Riftwar," and three "Legends
of the Riftwar" Novels, as well. The novels will be published in the
US by Avon starting later this year.
I don't do a lot of short fiction. I am, by choice and disposition, a
novelist, but I suspect I'll do a few more short pieces over the years.

But no speccific plans to cover previously well known characters such as
Anthony? I really thought he was going to become something more. Besides
Pug, and Nakor to some extent, magicians haven't been used a whole lot
outside the first Riftwar Saga.

If I do a character "right," readers often want more about them, even
if I've done everything with them I intended. Anthony, Owyn, and other
magicians are always going to be secondary characters to Pug. As the
Riftwar Cycle winds down, Pug will be taking more of a center stage.
Anthony has done his time on stage and I have no further need for him.
The same can be said for Marcus, Roo, Laurie, and a host of other
characters I've created.
The problem with certain characters can be summed up by something Julie
Schwartz once told me about editing the Justice League of America. He
told me, "In JLA, Superman has to be dumber and weaker than in his own
book, because if he isn't, then every month it's 'watch the rest of the
JLA stand around and watch Superman solve the problem.'" JLA was
Julie's least favorite title to edit.
If I do nothing but "Pug vs. the cosmic monster of the month," I lose
perspective on the common characters whose lives he's impacting. I was
pleased with how things went in the SerpentWar given it was essentially
about two common mortals, Erik and Roo.
You'll see more magic in the Darkwar than you have in a long time,
because it's appropriate to that story.
