I've seen a couple of recent (from the 1980s and '90s) S&S (and its
subsidiary imprints) that have a number line beginning with "2" and a
statement of "FIRST EDITION". In other words, they look like Random House
firsts. Since S&S seems not to have had a consistent practice, are these
firsts?

No, S&S books have "1" number lines. But you're right: They are
inconsistent about the "First Edition" statement. Back in the mid-'70s and
earlier, they used "First printing." Then for a long time they used just a
number line, and then they went through the period you mentioned (late '80s
through early 2000s) when they might or might not use the FE slug. Most
recently, I think they've done away with it.

You've confirmed my fears and quashed my hopes.

Thanks.
