However it seems Gríma wasn't the only one. Recall Éomer saying:

"It is ill dealing with such a foe: he [Saruman] is a wizard both
cunning and dwimmer-crafty, having many guises. He walks here and
there, they say, as an old man hooded and cloaked, very like to
Gandalf, as many now recall. His spies slip through every net, and
his birds of ill omen are abroad in the sky."

I imagine the "spies" referred to weren't Rohirric traitors, but
something else (Dunlendings? Orcs? Evil birds?)

I think the mention of spies slipping through every net was an indication
that they couldn't catch any spies despite laying traps for them but who
would be advising Theoden on which methods to use to trap the spies? One
spy close to the king would be worth many spies who weren't and would be
able to spread paranoia by saying there were many whereas there was only
him

Which is why "His spies slip through every net."

Actually, this is a small error by the publisher. Two words from
Tolkien's original manuscript were interchanged.

I have the manuscript here (encased in a beryl crystal on a golden
altar) and it clearly reads: "His slip spies through every net".

I leave it to your imagination how Saruman bred sentient underpants.

True, though I doubt it was merely an "error." I suspect it was yet
another one of Christopher's small-minded "corrections" whereby he
censored Tolkien's Truth in order to lure the unwary.

He also excised a charming ballet scene for Galadriel's lingerie.

The spies were orkish women in fishnet stockings, and Galadriel
thought they were the new servant maids sent from Rivendell, where the
standard of looks had really gone down due to the inbreeding caused by
the increased emigration to Aman, Surely you, an acolyte of mighty
MORAMBAR, would know that? It's in "The Peoples of Middle-earth", vol.
XIX, "Images of Middle-earth", pp. 123-131. All you need to do is read
the text instead of just looking at the pictures.

Yes, but it depends on which vol. XIX you read. There are at least a
dozen of them, not counting the spurious ones penned by Uderzo and
Goscinny.

"Asterix among the Elves" - I love that one. It's the one where Obelix
knocks put the entire army of Mordor, thus putting an abrupt ending to the
book.

That must be another variant ... mine is /Der Seher/.

Yes, and Obelix also keeps muttering "these Elves are crazy."
Tasteless rubbish. I bet the authors were in the pay of TEUNC.

Probably. The ifnamous Teuncistas stop at nothing.
In the German translation, Obelix muttered: "Sie spinnen, die Elben." I
wonder if there was a hidden flame of the river Elbe too in that one.

It's been some time since I read it, but I don't think it had anything
to do with Elves ... or Mordor. Just the usual Romans and, of course,
a wandering Seer who arrives at the start of the story.
