I don't know if anyone else here read Private Eye on a regular basis, but
the last issue featured some comments on a book entitled "Gods Behaving
Badly" about Gods living in the real world, making the point that it was not
an entirely original theme.
The latest issue has a letter from a Tina Rath mentioning that it's even
less of an original idea than previously suggested as Tom Holt had used the
idea in several of his books; it went on to mention other authors using some
variation of the plot (including pTerry)
Now, ordinarily, I probably wouldn't mention it - but the cartoon above the
letter is of lemmings jumping off a cliff. I'm wondering if there is
someone VERY familiar with the Squoire and his works working as the page
setter at Private Eye, or if it is a huge coincidence... If you have the
latest issue, check out page 92, sorry, 14 (the caption to the cartoon:
"Remember everybody - we're tombstoning this one!")

Au Res.,
Paul (off to see the Terracotta Army tomorrow with my sister, followed by a
radio show, "Recorded For Training Purposes", at the BBC Radio Theatre, and
probably coffee and cake in between!)

They really don't seem to have done their research. My copy of Thorne Smith's Night
Life of the Gods says copyright 1931.

Ah, yes! the petrified priest:
"When I came to this parish, I didn't think you needed saving.
Now I think you're not worth saving."

Cheers.
