Chapter 11 Sword of a Saint
Yasmina's eyes narrowed as she watched the little nun lead a gaggle of
children across the yard. In the two weeks since Ya Muntaquim left she had
found little chance to converse with the strange copper haired woman he had
put in her charge. How did Ya Muntaquim believe she was to make certain the
little nun took care of herself and did not fall back into the strange
cloistered life some of these Christians seemed to prefer if her charge was
not going to cooperate?
Yasmina shook her head in exasperation. This strange land made
her crazy. Who would believe a beautiful creature like her charge would
have been raised without any learning in the womanly arts? It would be easy
for the red-haired woman to rule any man she chose. All she needed was a
more womanly figure, a softer, more feminine posture, and clothing designed
to accentuate her charms rather than conceal them.
Allah never intended his most lovely creations to lock
themselves away in uselessness! Valerian's lack of feminine skills were
bound to have more serious consequences, if something was not done. Yasmina
had been observing the woman for some weeks, and not once had she suspected
the little nun of suffering the monthly curse. More telling still, she knew
no bloody rags had been either laundered or buried. The little nun was
pregnant. If she did not begin eating more and taking better exercise even
Allah would not save mother and child.
Yasmina vented her frustration in a satisfying stamp of one bare
foot. The movement set the coin trimmed ankle chains she wore jingling. A
most gratifying sound.
If Ya Muntaquim wanted to scale the defenses of this red haired
fortress of ice Yasmina would do her best to assist him. It was time she
took charge of the little nun and introduced her to a new world for her own
good.
With a plan in her mind, Yasmina hurried to her wagon and found
a covered basket filled with instruments, finger cymbals and veils. Perhaps
the cluster of children would offer the opening she needed to extract the
little nun from her shell.
