At one point, my house had one of those, in the middle of the
hallway wall. The prior owner wired it up to a new light fixture
he put in the living room. The housing inspector gave his
educated guess that the switch had, originally, been the on-off
switch for a swamp cooler on the roof. Is your house old enough
to have had a swamp cooler on the roof at some time?

If you do figure out what the switch does, be sure to let the rest of the
family know about it. Otherwise, if they're still in the house after you've
left they'll have to go through the same head-scratching procedure.

My grandfather (a civil engineer) built a house in the newly-developed
western suburbs of New Orleans (a location now squarely in the middle of the
uptown section next to Tulane University) for his family at the start of the
20th Century. Originally, of course, the house had no electricity. At some
point, probably in the late teens or early 1920s, the house was electrified,
and from the time I came along in the middle of WWII the wiring from the
late 1930s has remained largely untouched. Over the years new wiring was
run for air conditioning and some attic renovations, but that's about all.
An electrician in the 1950s pronounced the knob-and-tube wiring to be in
better shape than most new installations.

However...somewhere along the way two odd bits of wiring were installed. A
switch in the living room fed a pair of wall sconces (once fed by gas) in
the dining room, and a switch in the dining room (in the middle of the
house) controlled the floodlamp over the driveway in the rear. The sconces
were removed when we installed a breakfront cabinet in the dining room, so
there's no way that anyone would be able to figure out why the switch in the
living room was installed, but for lack of any real reason to redo the
wiring the garage light is still controlled from the dining room switch.

Oh yes...my sister lives there now. The house wasn't flooded after Katrina;
the edge of the floodwaters was about a block and a half to the north.

The house was built in 1953. I suspect that the leftover switch has
something to do with the master bedroom closet remodel that happened a
few years ago. Space from the hallway behind that mystery switch was
added to the closet, and maybe something was removed at that point?

Oh, wow, a few extra decades to accumulate eccentricities. Gods
and little green bunnies alone know what your switch might have
been -- too many possibilities.

Ah, well, what would life be without a few mysteries?

Well, I got an internship for cardiac research - I'll be culturing
cardiac and arterial cells on agar plates (not at the opera). Parents
bought a new car so that I can to said internship as the decrepit
honda wouldn't survive (and my sister needs it). Finished my first
year at Ursinus - got an A in ochem (WooHoo!). Sister graduates HS and
my bro turns 16 (and thinks he's driving). <Eats more fudge>

Was the lead-off batter in girl's softball for 4 years or so... but
couldn't catch or throw and was in fact deathly afraid of getting hit
in the face with a 'soft'ball. Rarely picked teams in MS and in HS
teams were assigned by grade (and the older grade always one).

Congratulations. That is really cool. I guess you're in for a lot of long
days or is that just in practicing surgery and not research?

Research. I have no bedside manner. My employers at Rite Aid have
stopped putting me on register or expecting me to answer the phone.
Though that's also partly because I was hired to wrangle
merchandise...
My major is chemistry, but the Dr. in charge of the lab goes to my
shul and my mom knows his wife...

Driving to and from Hershey during the height of tourist season won't
be - though this summer I'll be driving a new car (that isn't likely
to die on the way back) and will be allowed on the highway.

A in OChem? WooEeeeeee!

Never took OChem myself, but a friend did, and her textbook
looked terrifying. Culturing cardiac cells (say that 10 times
fast) sounds fun. :>

Lousy commutes for summertime jobs in college exist to teach us
why it is important to find apartments near work, later on. :>

I commuted into San Francisco every day one summer. An hour each
way, two on Fridays. I had a co-worker whose commute was twice
that. Great job, but...
