Hi all,
I'm having major problems getting online and staying online. I don't know
if the problem is AOL (a tech wiz friend of Bob's says it's AOL), my modem (an
internal 56K) or my old computer (My Mac will be 5 years old this summer and my
last one died on its fifth birthday). But I also can't seem to download the
chat logs.
Can someone please e-mail them to me? And any suggestions for how to fix this
problem? (yes, I'm thinking of leaving AOL but I haven't time to play with
setting up new software and a new address book until I get out school).
Thanks very much!

AOL? We don't need no stinkin AOL!
Besides, with most of the popular isp's they all act like AOL anyway. Plus,
you should be able to export your address book, or at the very least, send
an email to everyone in your address book, INCLUDING YOUR NEW EMAIL, and
then just save the emails to your new address book from that one email.
Sound like a plan?

I have heard that it's sometimes possible to export the address book. But I'm
not sure which ISPs will work on an OLD Macintosh. I'm still running OS 8.6
(Yes, I know I should have upgraded to the 9.0 somethings...but at the time
everything was running well and it seemed unnecessary). I can't run OS X
because I only have 333 mghrz processing speed and OSX requires at least 350.
Therefore I'm running AOL 5.0 because the newer Mac version (we never had 6.0,
7.0, etc.) is AOL for Mac OS X.
As soon as I have some time (like after school gets out) I'll have to explore
my options.
In the meantime, is there a way to access the newsgroup other than through
AOL? Like via Netscape or IE? If so, how? That might work better.
Thanks!

Susan, try going through <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.google.com." target="_blank">www.google.com.</a> Above the search bar, there's a
little tab that says "groups" click on that, and then type alt.books.deryni
in to the search box. Ta da! Google groups are not without their
disadvantages, but it is a way to access the group until you have time to do
more major tech work to divorce yourself from AOL.

Talk to your isp, most have some kind of newsgroup access. If not, I posted
a free service a while back. I'll try to find it again.

Melissa, you're wonderful! Thanks!
Of course, now that I can access the newsgroup through Google, AOL is suddenly
behaving tonight. <G>
I tried this both at home and at work, and got to read all the recent chat logs
(other than those that MAK sent me...thanks MAK!)
All these years, I've always accessed the newsgroup only through AOL. As for
calling AOL, even if I get through to a real person (after a looooooong wait)
they'll probably tell me they won't help me because I'm not using the newest
version of the AOL software. (Not that I can use it -- it requires OSX which
won't run on my computer). I went through a huge fight with AOL over that
with my dad's laptop several years ago and explained (to no avail) that he
couldn't upgrade the software because the newer version caused trouble with the
insurance software (and it was a business computer he was supposed to use for
business). >> Stay informed about: Techie Problems |

I use new.cis.dfn.de--which just changed names to news.individual.net.
It's free, and has a pretty good feed, as far as I can tell. Info
here: <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://news.individual.net/" target="_blank">http://news.individual.net/</a>
I hope you can upgrade soon to OSX, Susan--it's *really* nice, I
think!!

Alas, I can't upgrade to OS X in this computer because OS X requires a 350
megahertz processor and my G3 only has 333 megahertz processor. I'm told that
would make OS X run terribly slow and that upgrading to a faster processor is
tantamount to buying a new computer.
