Post subject: Thread: Tolkien's Illustrations present (& not!) in versions of HoME: Vol. VIII
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>tolkien (more info?)

I'd like to begin a new thread that hopefully will eventually contain
a full list of all illustrations/maps/plans/manuscript pages
reproduced in the various printings/versions of the History of Middle
Earth series. Thus, people who don't have the volumes could find out
some of what they're missing!

I do need some help in this project in that I do not own all the
volumes in this series, and some that I do own do not include the
illustrations (for example, I have the American hardcover printing of
Vol. XII 'The Peoples of Middle-Earth' in which Houghton Mifflin
failed to include the frontispiece).

Once all information concerning this topic has appeared I'll collect
it all into a single file and perhaps one of you fine folks out there
with a Tolkien website can put it up for everyone.

For each volume I'd like to get as much information as possible
concerning different printings - UK, US, foreign (do translations even
exist?), hardcover/trade paperback/mass-market paperback, detail of
dustjacket if present, and anything else anyone would like to include.
And I'd like to know of any editions that DO NOT include the
illustrations (I know that some printings of the mass-market 'The
Shaping of Middle-Earth' do not include the maps!).

For each illustration I think we'd need a title, page on which it
appears, and any pages in the volume which describe the illustration.

I hope some folks out there in Usenetland will help me out!

Cheers,
Michael 'Elentirmo'

Wow! I have the HarperCollins paperback 2002 edition of the Shaping of
ME. It has at least 7 B&W maps in the main body of the book, as well as
2 colour inserts of the two halves of the first Silmarillion map. I hope
they are all there...

You are trying to list the differences in illustrations between
different editions of the HoME volumes, right? Have you checked that
no-one else has done this already? I know that there is a descriptive
bibliography by Wayne G. Hammond (which lists minute changes made
between different editions of LotR and other Tolkien books), but maybe
this doesn't cover HoME.

Hi Christopher,

Mmmm, yes, I'd like to find out the differences of illustrations
between the different editions/printings of the HoME series, but most
importantly I'm looking to find out just what illustrations were ever
included in these volumes. As far as I can tell such a list isn't
available online (and of course I have searched both the 'net & Usenet
archives), and few bookstores or libraries carry even half these
volumes. I do know that many of these illustrations are in Hammond &
Scull's 'JRRT - Artist & Illustrator', but a list of those
illustrations is something I'll work on in the future. As far as
Hammond's bibliography goes, this is a scarce work and obviously the
info. contained therein is not available online (if it even includes
HoME).

Cheers,
Michael

P.S. I hope I can post the info about 'Sauron Defeated' by tomorrow
night...

Well, I don't have time to type out lists myself, but I don't mind
checking your lists with my HoME editions. Would that help?
