Post subject: Looking for four Thornton Burgess books....
Archived from groups: rec>arts>books>childrens (more info?)

Hi!

I'm looking for four Thornton Burgess books, first editions, first
printing. They are:

The adventures of Peter Cottontail (1914)
The adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel (1915)
The adventures of Old Man Coyote (1916)
The adventures of Bobby Coon (1918)

What I want are the editions with line art (not grey-shaded/toned art)
in them. There are only six illustrations in each book. (And actually,
with the exception of Bobby Coon, I don't need all the illustrations in
each book; i.e., I only need the frontispiece for Peter Cottontail; the
third and fourth ones for Chatterer, and the list and order of the
illustrations for Old Man Coyote.)

Anyway, can anyone help me locate a copy of each of these books? I am
willing to buy them if available, or just borrow them if you want to
keep the copy. Or, if your library has them on the shelf, I can arrange
for an inter-library loan through my local library.

Any help at all is appreciated.

Can't really help, but to clarify - are we only talking about the
Harrison Cady illustrations? There are at least two illustrators. Not
to mention that Cady himself did two slightly different sets of ink
illustrations for probably each book! (I wish I knew how exactly one
distinguishes those two sets so booksellers would understand what
you're asking for - or not asking for.)

The four books I want are the Harrison Cady illustrations.
The other illustrator only worked on the first four Mother
West Wind books. And yes he did two types of illstrations,
one set is the line drawings, the other set were grey-scale.

To clarify: Which set of drawings makes Peter Rabbit - and maybe other
characters - look more cutesy?

I'm not sure what you mean by cutesy, one set of Cady
drawings is in line drawing and the other in shaded
gray-scale. From a technical point, grey-scale is more
difficult to draw and tougher for printers to make look
good, it also looks slightly more realistic. Both sets of
drawing are basically the exact same scenes, just done
differently (in television, to use the comparison, it's like
the difference between a black-and-white and a colorized
version of the same show). I don't know why, but I prefer
the line drawings, myself.
