I recently discovered a new author, Jasper Fforde (no spelling
mistake, he's Welsh), and his books staring Thursday Next, Literary
Detective.

They are set in a parallel world where the Crimean war hasn't ended
yet, there are no Jehova's Witnesses, but Baconians, dodos are alive
again, as are mammoths, and literature is an important area of law
giving and law enforcement.

The style is hilarious and reminiscent of Terry Pratchett, puns are
abundant, and literary quotes and innuendo litter the pages.

just thought some of you might have heard of him, and if not yet,
maybe you'll like what I just described and give it a try.

(Oh, and check his website after reading the books! it's fun!)

He's on my "To Buy" list based on some other folks' reviews.
Unfortunately I spent my last chunk of discretionary dollars on
B5 videos so I haven't gotten any new (at least to me) books
recently.

Of course, this *has* given me the opportunity to re-read some of
the books in my library. Just finished Julie Czernada's 2 Web
Shifters books and am hoping she'll write a third!

Aren't they wonderful?

I picked up The Eyre Affair and Lost In A Good Book while I was in
Melbourne for my sister's funeral. I laughed myself silly over them
even though it was a dreadfully sad and stressful time. I have The
Well Of Lost Plots on order and should get it soon. I can't wait.

You'll enjoy it. It goes much deeper into the workings of the book
world, and how fiction is produced! I loved it! And the next one is
coming out in august! *humongous grin* I can't wait.

Oh, yes. I read the first two in quick order, and am waiting
for the third to hit paperback because I don't enjoy them
quite *that* much.

It is? It did? Haven't seen it locally. Guess I'll just have to
force myself to go to the bookstore! <g>

Isn't she wonderful? Hubby found the first two books almost by accident at
the bookstore. Book 3 is due out in paperback in a couple of months and I
am anxiously awaiting receiving it. Smile

I really enjoy how he sends up classic literature. I know the next time I
read Jane Eyre I will have a whole different perspective as I wonder what
the characters are doing when they aren't directly involved in the story.

A whole hearted second here on the rcommendation to check out Jasper Fforde
and Thursday Next.

Yep, it did. She just came out with a new book in hardcover too. It's called
Survival: Species Imperative #1 in a new series.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Wow. That's kinda creepy.

I checked "The Eyre Affair" out of the library a week ago. Haven't
read it yet due to work pressures, but ... you only had a several-week
window when I'd have the book in my home, and you posted about it just
then!

Have been vaguely meaning to read it since I heard about it. Recently
my brother (whose literary preferences are, to me, peculiar, but whose
literary _recommendations_ are rare yet superlative) recommended it.
Took a while to find it not-checked-out of the library.

Well, you'll know a bit more what the characters do during time off
after reading Book 3, that much I can tell you. And the UK edition is
already out in paperback, as far as I know, at least I've got a
paperback version (I think, at least it's not hardcover), so you might
want to look into that, if you're impatient.

Akinaj,
I just spent the last 4 years in Germany so I know what kind of weather you
usually have. This sunlight is great, even if it messes up the sleep
patterns of everyone. No house here is equipped with rouladens. I think it
should be standard as it is in Germany. However, our summer temps are only
in the 70s. This last week it has been in the 80s and the locals are
complaining that it is too hot. Sad I'll trade you places in the winter
though when it gets to be -20F and we have 5 feet of snow.

I just might get the UK version. I want to know how Thursday is doing and
how the character exchange program works. Thanks for the info.

You know, I wouldn't mind trading places in winter. I *like* snow and
cold, for some reason. The winter I spent in Canada was great, even
with -35C. Although I wouldn't mind Alaska in the summer either. I'm
not a big fan of high temperatures, and I like sunlight.

the third one is supposed to be in trade paper back in the next month
or so, and there is a fourth one in press...

Great reads...even if there is a bit of British flare to them...
