Hi Henrick,
The events in the movie are based on a letter that Neal wrote to Kerouac in
December 1950 -- the "Joan Anderson" letter. It is reproduced in the new
book "Neal Cassady: Collected Letters, 1944-1967" (Penguin).
The events that Neal describes took place in 1945, when Neal was 19 years
old, living in Denver. Neal did not meet Kerouac and Ginsberg until a year
later, 1946, in New York, and he did not meet Carolyn until 1947. So that's
why they do not feature in the movie.
Best wishes,

Thanks for the heads up on the new book. I read an earlier collection,
"As Ever", and Neal's best, most relaxed writing seems to be in his
letters.

THE COLLECTED LETTERS ARE AWESOME. There are so many details on Cassady
from these letters that I never read anywhere before. Quite revealing
and the earliest letters reveal him to be quiet a well read and
intellegent guy. The excellent annotations by Dave moore, right where
they are needed, makes this more of an oral autobigraphy than a
collection of letters. I'm half done with it and so happy it was
finally published. MORE than worth the wait. I't amazing that after
reading so much abt Cassady, that there was so much more to know.

Gotta getta copy this weekend. Cassady was the heart and soul of the
Beatnik movement.
I have seen where the wolf has slept by the silver stream.
I can tell by the mark he left you were in his dream.
Ah child of countless trees, ah child of boundless seas.
What are you, what are you meant to be?
Speaks his name for you were born to me,
Born to me, cassidy.
Lost now on the country miles in his cadillac.
I can tell by the way you smile he is rolling back.
Come wash the nighttime clean, come grow the scorched ground
green.
Blow the horn, tap the tambourine.
Close the gap on the dark years in between.
You and me, cassidy.
Quick beats in an icy heart, catch colt draws a coffin cart,
There he goes and now here she starts, hear her cry.
Flight of the seabirds,
Scattered like lost words,
Wheel to the storm and fly.
Fare thee well now, let your life proceed by it?s own design.
Nothing to tell now, let the words be your?s, I?m done with
mine.
Fare thee well now, let your life proceed by it?s own design.
Nothing to tell now, let the words be your?s, I?m done with
mine.

I think it's been told before, but if so I've forgotten. Here's what I do
remember about The Joan Letter.
When I was new in California in 1972, I lived for four months in the Neal
Cassady household, and was allowed to read Carolyn's collection of letters
from all the icons, reproduced from where the originals were stored (Texas
A&M, I think it was). I saw references in there to the Joan Letter, and
much anger expressed by Kerouac and maybe others and directed at someone who
owned a boat and took Neal among others out in San Francisco Bay, and
somehow the letter blew overboard and was lost. The pilot and owner of the
boat was blamed for the tragic loss by Kerouac.
In the back of The First Third was a series of letters used as filler. In
there was a story of a bus trip involving the hero and a lady named Joan. I
showed the letter to Carolyn, and she showed it to someone visiting (maybe
John Montgomery) with the idea that this might be the long-lost Joan Letter.
Obviously she was not aware at the time exactly what the Joan Letter was
about.
Now, I recall being told hereabouts, possibly by Dave Moore, that the two
Joans and the missives describing them are separate. But the question I
don't remember seeing the answer for is: If the famous Joan Letter was
lost, how was it found?
I apologize if all this has been well covered before, but isn't it
interesting how some memory remains steadfast amidst all the storms of
updates and corrections?

In the "Memory Babe" bio, if my mem'ry serves me well, Kerouac had
thoughts that the guy with the boat, I forgot his name, actually "lost"
the writing out of jealousy of Cassady.

These important details can *never* be covered enough! Thus the endless
steam of bios on these heroes of the highest order!
Any and all memories you have of your time with Carolyn and the last of
the Beats are very welcome!

Yes indeed. It has all been told before, even hereabouts. Check the archives
