It's a book I enjoy, though it's not without its third act problems.
The first two-thirds of the book is simply fantastic--Ragle Gumm's world is
slowly falling apart and it seems that everything around him exists -solely-
for him--but when the reality of the situation is revealed, my reaction was
one of, "You've got to be fucking kidding me, how stupid can this be?"
My understanding is that Dick's editor of the time (Donald Wolheim, I
believe) wanted the last third of the book expanded into its own story,
perhaps it would have been something similar to Heinlein's THE MOON IS A
HARSH MISTRESS.
It is a fun and influential book, though, as seen in "The Truman Show."
