Hello,

Recently managed to aquire this book and read it over a few days last
week - I must say that, other than the slightly dissapointingly
standard SF ending (but then Phil sometimes had problems coralling his
stories in the end during the early period) it was amongs his best -
the way the paranoia builds over the first half of the novel is
probably more subtle than even some of his later works - marvelous
stuff.

This story doesn't seem to get mentioned in the same reverence as the
more obvious classics like Ubik, Scanner and Three Stigmata (although
Lawrence Sutin does praise it highly in 'Divine Invasions', which
brought it to my attention).

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on it?

It's a book I enjoy, though it's not without its third act problems.

The first two-thirds of the book is simply fantastic--Ragle Gumm's world is
slowly falling apart and it seems that everything around him exists -solely-
for him--but when the reality of the situation is revealed, my reaction was
one of, "You've got to be fucking kidding me, how stupid can this be?"

My understanding is that Dick's editor of the time (Donald Wolheim, I
believe) wanted the last third of the book expanded into its own story,
perhaps it would have been something similar to Heinlein's THE MOON IS A
HARSH MISTRESS.

It is a fun and influential book, though, as seen in "The Truman Show." Smile

I actually read this last week (I read UBIK this week) and I chose not
to read the last few chapters. I think it says in the book - or
perhaps I read online - that the last few chapters were 'bolted' onto
the end of the book at the behest of the publisher. I don't think it
ruined my experience. I agree with your comments totally. Have you
seen 'The Truman Show' ? Isn't the premise similar!
