I spent the afternoon up on the roof, sweeping the gravel into a pile
then bagging it to use on the garden - the flat roof is supposedly
going to be replaced tomorrow, so I thought I'd recycle the gravel.

Anyway: we have a home-made nesting box screwed to the outside wall
of the house, about 15 feet (5 metres for the metric-enabled), and
I'd been wondering if it was ever used... this was the moment that
a blue tit chose to fly straight into the entrance hole, deliver
the feed, and fly back out in search of another load. Cool>

The box is a chunk of treetrunk with the bark left on, and a 1-inch
(25.4mm ftme) entrance hole. It's been up there for 30 years - just
as well I didn't try to clean it out this year!

There was continuous traffic despite me being on the roof about
10 feets away, so they must be used to me by now.

On the other hand... I saw a wasp fly into the gap between the
top of the wall and the undereave soffit while I was up there.
This explains the occasional wasp corpse in the roofspace, and
means that I will have to wage relentless chemical warfare on
the skinheads of the insect world fairly soon.

Chris.

There was a defunct wasps' nest (that's loosely binding - the nest was
defunct, not the wasps, though I assume they were as well now that I
come to think of it) in the attic of the current cave. Apparently they
don't re-use them.

It has been spelt "wasp nest" in the past, if that's any help to you.
Otherwise the older dictionaries in this house give the dwelling of wasps
as being "wasp's nest", as also "hornet's nest", presumably on the grounds
that the nest is the property of the queen in each case, not that of her
minions.

*A* wasps' nest? *One*? Hah! There were four altogether. They may not
re-use the previous one, but they don't seem to mind building another next
door, or on the other side of the road^Wattic. And they were removed not
with a tank but with a hoover.

Very useful things for removing dead wasps' nests, Hoovers. And a
cavalry sabre.

Yes, I have pictures...

Now _there's_ an evil thought: Industrial vacuum cleaner[0], with funnel on
the end of the hose. Halfway down the hose fit a bug zapper; nothing fancy,
my 2500V neon sign transformer ought to eliminate[1] anything passing by.

Now where did I put those busbar insulators...?

Having left the midshipman's dirk *and* the dress-uniform sabre elsewhere,
I used the handle end of a broom.

I am suddenly reminded of the entirely genuine gopher-hoover.

Not the gopher-exploder? ITWSBT.

No. It sucked them out of their holes, if they were in places they weren't
wanted, and they were subsequently released into the wild elsewhere.

i don't *think* they were actually *fired* into the wild... It was being
put forward as a humane solution to the gopher problem.

If I could remember where or when I came across this, I'd say, but I can't.
It was a genius with a drain-clearing van, I think, who dreamed up the
idea. He noticed that an average gopher was the right calibre to fit the
suction tube. As it were.

One of our American villagers might know, but I suspect they may not be
seeing this thread on account of the subject-line.

It was a giant vacuum cleaner designed for getting gophers out of a large
area of ground. I'm afraid I can no longer find the news story.

Gosh. That sounds like an awful lot of kapital expenditure just to get rid

The struggle between Suslowicz and wasp is at its heart a class
struggle.

I remember seeing this on CNN in Canada ten years ago. They were
selling them in Japan since they were the current fashionable pet in
Tokyo.

Absolutely hilarious to watch since it was a translucent tube.

No, I can't guess. Have a cup of herbal tea[1] and explain, please?
