There should be at least 5 year quarantine before a film
could be voted, if they wanted an accurate take.

I don't know. Those strike me as pretty accurate for any purposes we
can have. Since it's all based on "what a bunch of guys voted for"
anyway, how can you worry about the subtle distinction between a
couple of "8.7" movies anyway?
They've already been manipulated in other ways anyway, or else some
movie with only one "10.0" vote would be the number one.
OTOH, if IMDB is offering a special "Top 100 films of all time" list,
they might want to do something to offset the (possibly temporary)
huge popularity of the LOTR movies.

It would be very interesting to see what would happen if you took
1,000 American citizens (above some minimum age) and had them watch
and rate all 1,000 of the top 1,000 titles.
For example, with some titles, there's a bias in the fact that only
people who would be willing to see that particular movie could
possibly be voting. But if you force all these people to watch all of
these movies...
How would some random 80-year-old vote regarding Pulp Fiction?
How would some random 14-year-old vote regarding Seven Samurai?
OTOH, that's not actually the most accurate test if I, as a guy who
thinks he might like Pulp Fiction, am wondering what other people who
saw it thought about it. I would be better represented by others who
have chosen to see it than by an old lady who saw it against her will.
So, again, IMDB seems to work okay.
.... Except that it's hard to find a bunch of guys who will give a "9"
movie an extra point to offset the damage by one angry guy who gives
it a "1." The difference is a lot more clear between an "8" and a
"10" than between a "2" and a "4."
Maybe it should be a scale from 1 to 5 instead...?

I'm surprised that "The Matrix" is not on the list. I guess "Reloaded"
and "Revolutions" spoiled its rep. >> Stay informed about: Top 20 movies at IMDB |

Well it's obvious isn't it.
The seven members of the seven Samurai were all Japanese, whereas the
nine members of the Fellowship were 4 Hobbits, two Men, one of the
Istari, an Elf and a Dwarf! <G> >> Stay informed about: Top 20 movies at IMDB |

With that kind of vote-rigging creativity, you could have a job in
November. The only movies that would be kept out of the top 20 by the
application of a 5-year-wait rule would of course be the 3 LOTR movies
and Memento. I didn't know you didn't like Memento

If you want to avoid the fanboy vote, compare the top 20 as voted by
female voters on imdb.com:
1 Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The (2002) 8.9/10 (71988 votes)
2 Shawshank Redemption, The (1994) 9.0/10 (108401 votes)
3 Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The (2003) 8.9/10 (44280
votes)
4 Schindler's List (1993) 8.8/10 (74054 votes)
5 Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The (2001) 8.8/10
(116082 votes)
6 Usual Suspects, The (1995) 8.7/10 (79593 votes)
7 Star Wars (1977) 8.8/10 (105943 votes)
8 Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Le (2001) 8.7/10 (40253 votes)
9 Princess Bride, The (1987) 8.2/10 (42381 votes)
10 Casablanca (1942) 8.8/10 (50362 votes)
11 Godfather, The (1972) 9.0/10 (86785 votes)
12 Memento (2000) 8.7/10 (64261 votes)

Just what I was going to say, but you beat me to it. The thing that's
amazing is the similarity of the male and female lists, not the few
differences. Of course, female members of the IMDb may not be
representative of the female population as a whole (fangirls?). And
judging by the close correspondence between the male and unified
lists, the sample size may be quite small (unfortunately the voting
figures above are male + female totals, not for females only).

I have always insisted that women in general are too intelligent to like
Sleepless in Seattle and intelligent enough to appreciate The Three Stooges,
despite the contrary stereotype.

Appreciating The Three Stooges requires intelligence? >> Stay informed about: Top 20 movies at IMDB |

I hope you're not prepared to make THAT argument, because it's the
weakest argument of all. A great many "Best Picture" Oscar winners
will never make any "All-time Best" lists. Conversely, many that have
never won the statuette are consistently voted among the all-time
best, by other groups.
"Citizen Kane" (1941) is the most obvious example. Cited frequently
as one of the greatest films ever made, it did not win with the Oscar
voters. Others that should have, but didn't:
Sunrise (1927)*
City Lights (1931)
King Kong (1933)
Sullivan's Travels (1942)
It's a Wonderful Life (1946)
The Treasure of Sierra Madre (1948)
The Searchers (1956)
Vertigo (1958)
Raging Bull (1980)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
About a dozen years ago, some group of film critics met to decide
which was the best film made in the 1980s. The near-unanimous choice
was "Raging Bull" (1980). Thus, the group disagreed with the Academy
for not only the 1980 award, but for all ten years of that decade.
In addition, there are numerous worthy films made before the Academy
Awards began. In no particular order, these include: Broken
Blossoms, The Phantom of the Opera, The Gold Rush, The General,
Metropolis, and The Crowd. All would be considered for a list of Best
Films Ever, by any thoughtful selection committee.
*Sunrise is asterisked because, though it did not win the Oscar as
Best Picture, it did win an Oscar for "Best Artistic Production" -- a
category that the Oscars would not use again.
Dan N.
P.S.: Some critics and fans complain that there are too many awards
shows today. The Oscars, the Golden Globes, the SAG awards, People's
Choice, etc.... But I applaud the existence of awards shows other
than the Oscars, if only because Oscar so frequently gets it wrong.
