So, tickets went on sale, more or less, yesterday. I hadn't decided
whether to order mine online or just by the box office sometime during
the day to pick them up. I called around 9am to check when the box
office would open (since I'd heard conflicting reports of 10am and Noon).
The guy at the theatre confirmed they would be on sale at Noon, and said
the line had already started to form. He also said that they would be
sold online, but didn't think much of the chance of being able to get
them that way.
Since I'm only about 5 minutes away from that theatre, I went over during
my lunch break, arriving at about 11:30. At that point, there were about
70 people in line. By the time tickets went on sale, there were probably
another 40 or 50 behind me.
They let people in to the box office area, and opened up the sales online
through Moviephone, promptly at Noon. Equally promptly, and very
enthusiastically, the Moviephone server crashed (checking online
afterward, this was apparently repeated across the country). After a
delay of about 5 minutes, trying in vain to get the server to function
for more than a second before re-crashing, they went ahead and started
selling tickets to the people in line. They opened up all 10 ticket
windows (this is a 24 theatre multiplex), all just selling trilogy
tickets, and processed the line in about 10 minutes, selling out their
ticket allotment (450 tickets, with each person limited to a maximum of 6
tickets). According to the manager of the theatre, as far as they could
tell, not one single ticket was sold online.
As of this morning, 55 of the 100 theatres nationwide are reported sold
out, and some of the others may already be but not reported.
So everyone knows where I will be on Dec. 16, from 2pm until about 1am.
(okay, I'll probably be there well before 2pm)
