First quarter of article, roughly:
Carel Chapman has lived for years with things that jump out at her.
Some of these things are ferocious animals and mythical creatures.
Some are dinosaurs and horror-movie monsters. One is the late Michael
Jackson, dangling his baby over a balcony.
For two decades, Chapman has collected pop-up books, those intricate
feats of three-dimensional paper engineering that might seem like
child’s play to some. But not to Chapman, now retired as a Hewlett-
Packard project manager, who has amassed nearly 2,000 books she
considers works of art.
When Chapman started collecting the books, her daughter had already
graduated from the University of New Hampshire. “It had nothing to do
with children,’’ said Chapman with a smile.
Chapman recently donated the collection to her daughter’s alma mater,
where selections are on display through Dec. 16 at the UNH Museum.
With subjects from the natural world to man-made wonders, the
collection represents nearly every pop-up book published in what is
sometimes referred to as the second Golden Age of the form: roughly
the 1970s through the 1990s, when paper engineers (as the artists are
called) began producing increasingly sophisticated designs. (The first
Golden Age was in the latter half of the 19th century, when “movable’’
books, many of them educational titles on subjects such as geography
and anatomy, found a growing audience.)..............
