This is probably well known, but not to me.
When looking at the complete list of Asimov titles, I see
443 Comets and Meteors

The Mammoth Book of Golden Age Science Fiction:
Short Novels of the 1940's

444 Puzzles of the Black Widowers

Where the 'The Mammoth ...' is unnumbered.
Looking in the Anthology section of the list sorted by
types of book the book is again unnumbered..

What gives?

You didn't say /whose/ list /where/. I know of several Asimov
sites that maintain a copy of "The Opus" list(s) using the
original numbering used by Asimov.

My first take on your bafflement is that someone found that "The
Mammoth ..." book contained one of Asimov's works in it, and
stuck it in there roughly chronologically.

My first thought was to see if Edward Seiler's web page,
http://www.asimovonline.com/asimov_home_page.html,

particularly his "big lists"

"A "big list" of all known editions [that is, known by the list
compiler, Ed Seiler] of Asimov's books, in order of publication.
This includes title, publisher, year of publication, number of
pages, size, Library of Congress call number, Dewey number, ISBN,
and Library of Congress card catalog number. (183k)
Note: This file has been formatted for 132 columns.

http://www.asimovonline.com/oldsite/asimov_big_list.html

"The "big list" in alphabetical order by title. (183k)
Note: This file has been formatted for 132 columns."

http://www.asimovonline.com/oldsite/asimov_big_list_by_title.html

could shed any light. Got it in one, on the first "Big List":

600 P The Mammoth Book Of Golden Age Carroll & Graf
Jul-89 504 PS648.S3M37 813.08 0-88184-480-2 89-831
Science Fiction : Short Novels
Of The 1940's

It would appear that its proper Opus # is 600.

Actually, as explained in the FAQ, the last book for which there is any
record of Asimov assigning a number is number 468, _Isaac Asimov
Presents the Great Science Fiction Stories 23 (1961)_, published in July
1991. But _ The Mammoth Book of Golden Age Science Fiction_ was
published in July 1989, so if it belongs on Asimov's list, it should
have a number less than 468. Asimov wrote an introduction for it, and
almost certainly did enough work on it to merit a spot on his list, so
the most probable explanation is that he somehow overlooked it in the
last list that he numbered. Since I consider the canonical numbering to
be that which was done by Asimov, this makes for an awkward situation
which I reconcile by assigning it the first open spot in the
non-canonical numbering that I now use for the later books, which is 469.

The lists that Ogden quotes are really showing their age, and I shall
have to update them on my website soon.
