This is our 247th edition. Happy New Year. With two weeks since the
last week I saw anything worth going to the store for, I return with
only one book to review.

New Warriors #8 - "Reunion, Part Two of Two" (Writer: Kevin Grevioux,
Penciler: John Malin, Inker: Victor Dlazaba,
Colorist:
Marte Gracia)
Night Thrasher continues a meeting with some old friends, while the
rest
of the New Warriors enjoy a quiet evening at home, interrupted only
by
some weighty moral issues.
The Night Thrasher plot didn't do a whole lot for me, because I really
have no knowledge of the history these characters have together, aside
from what little bits are revealed here, which didn't particularly
interest me.
Somewhat better were the scenes with the rest of the New Warriors
bonding together, and discussing a report that called them terrorists.
In theory this should be right up my alley, but something kept it from
really working as well as it should have. Part of it was the art.
Again, most of these characters have no distinctive look, and it
doesn't
help that the artist (and colorist) seems to have them looking
exactly
the same except for clothes and hairstyles. They all seem vaguely
asian,
but only one of the characters actually is.
Another problem lies in their sudden bonding as a family and reminders
of
how the X-Men tossed them out. I really can't entirely blame the
writer
of this issue for that, because, it is essentially what happened
according to the other books. But it all still leaves a bad taste in
my mouth, and despite the words here and the events I have trouble
believing Jubilee feels closer to a few of her New Warrior friends
than
she did to the X-Men. That's the kind of thing you have to sell the
audience on by showing them, rather than just asserting it.
It's an okay issue, but nothing spectacular. The book as a whole
keeps
moving along, but it needs some more definition all around to really
take off or the next few issues may not work any better.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, there's one book again. Astonishing X-Men #24.
I may or may not get Young Avengers Presents #1.
See you next week...
