This is our 248th edition. Just one book to review, but I'm running
late and it's one of those books where a lot has already been said,
so it'll be quick.

Astonishing X-Men #24 - "Unstoppable, Part 6" (Writer: Joss Whedon,
Artist: John Cassaday, Colors: Laura Martin)
Most the X-Men go to to try and take out the Breakworld's retaliator,
while a few stay behind to, if necessary, fulfill the prophecy and
destroy the planet.
It's okay, with enjoyable moments, but it still suffers the big
problem of the Breakworld arc... the basic story just isn't good
enough to be worth all the delays. With some of the earlier parts
of Whedon's run, it wasn't a big problem, but this capper just isn't
as engaging, despite that two whole worlds are at stake. If it came
at a good pace, it wouldn't be such a problem - we also wouldn't be
in a situation where many people have guessed at certain elements of
Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men merely because the rest of the books
have moved on and we can see where the characters are. Maybe
Whedon'll
still surprise us, maybe not, but it does blunt some of the drama, the
feeling of expectation and wondering what might happen.
There's a certain feeling of phoning it in at times here too, with
Whedon relying on some of his standard tricks of language and even a
line or two that feels reminiscent of Buffy. And the ending includes
a
big moment that I really hope gets some better explanation. Whedon,
for all his skills, has not been noted for his ability to get science
right, and unless the conclusion explains its way around a
fundamental
problem with the plan as described, someone will need to sit down and
have a long talk with him about how space works.
