This is our 242nd edition, with two books. I'm running a bit late
today, and my hands are stiff after a long walk in the cold rain,
so I'm going to try and be brief.
This week we have...

Loners #6 (of 6) - "Double Identities" (Writer: C.B. Cebulski,
Pencils: Karl Moline, Inks: Mark Pennington,
Colors: Beth Sotelo)
Darkhawk faces off against Phil Urich, who has stolen the amulet that
gives him his power. Things are revealed.
I was worried last time around that there were too many plot threads
and mysteries dangling, and that they might not be satisfactorially
wrapped up in the final issue. This issue confirms those worries.
All told, it feels like a bit of a mess, an excuse to get everybody
in costume and fighting and then in the last few pages explanations
are rattled off that wrap up a few of the ongoing mysteries but that
really don't explain a number of things. In an ongoing this might be
okay (but I think I'm now less interested in picking up a Loners
series,
at least under this premise and with this creative team), but for the
last issue of a mini it feels like half a story.

New X-Men #44 - "Messiah Complex, Chapter Four" (Writers: Craig
Kyle & Chris Yost, Penciler: Humberto Ramos, Inker:
Carlos Cuevas, Colorist: Edgar Delgado)
The X-Men go after the Marauders, but when the younger students learn
the Purifiers are out there and may have the baby, they decided they
want to go out on their own. After all, the Purifiers killed many of
their friends, and so they have a score to settle.
The issue is okay, but it doesn't really sell me on the plot. The
New
X-Men going after the Purifiers is reasonable for what they've been
through, but all it really reminds me is how annoyed I am at what
they've been through under this creative team... and this issue
suggests they're not nearly at the end of it. The universe of the
X-Men has become far too grim for my tastes.
After this, I've decided. I'm no longer interested enough to pick up
the rest of Messiah Complex. This will mean temporarily dropping the
titles I read that tie into it, but since I'm probably going to be
missing out on major parts of the character's stories anyway, it's not
that big an extra sacrifice.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, it'll be another skip week. So see you in two
probably.
See you next time...
