Anybody know where Dick got his inspiration behind the VALIS book? Great
stuff.

Great stuff indeed! I read this book when it first came out and was
mesmerized!

Yes this was all too real too him. If you are fortunate enough to get
your hands on a copy of "The Selected Letters of Phillip K Dick" you
get to see just how wacked he really was.

Speaking of this, does anyone know if there are other volumes of this
series released? The fact that the title included the year (1974)
leads me to believe that at least there was an intention to release
compilations from other years. Did this ever materialize?

Rumor has it that tomato man put forth the following:

From what he claims was a real-life event; *He* was struck by the pink beam of
light in the head in February, 1974.

Here's R. Crumb's illustrated version of the events:

Thanks for the replies. That's a pretty intense story. The bit at the end
about a cipher in Flow My Tears (writing was pretty small, hope I got that
right) was curious. It conspicuously didn't say anything about the location
of the cipher.

That was something I'd wondered a bit about VALIS, if there were ciphers in
it, as some had led me to believe. If so, perhaps I missed them but it's
been awhile and a re-read is probably in order. Thanks again for the
replies.

From:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.philipkdickfans.com/pkdweb/FLOW%20MY%20TEARS.htm" target="_blank">http://www.philipkdickfans.com/pkdweb/FLOW%20MY%20TEARS.htm</a>

On p151 0f VALIS, Fat tells his friends "The two-word cypher
signal KING FELIX" was sent out in Feb '74, and that "the united
States Army cryptographers studied it, but couldn't discern who it
was intended for or what it meant." Fat's friends ask him how he
knows that, but he won't say; nor does he explain in what form it
appeared.

Phil himself, though, was less reticent, and once pointed out that on
p218 of the first edition of FLOW MY TEARS the last paragraph
break juxtaposes the word "king" directly over the name "Felix".
The novel was published in Feb 1974, and Phil said Doubleday
told him that the Army did buy -- as I recall -- more than 400
copies of it {Tim Powers}
