Well I was waiting a long time to see what happened to the crew after
they got back to the Alpha Quadrant, and I definitely enjoyed "Homecoming".
While the book isn't perfect, it was still a good read.
Detractors:
For one, it was written on perhaps a fourth grade level. I kept
thinking I while I was reading it that it could have easily been in the
"Young Adult" section of the library. It was like reading a screenplay
rather than a novel, jumping quickly between scenes, never taking the
time to really develop the ambience that good novels really have the
ability to convey.
Two: it could get a little hoaky at times, especially surrounding the
"Photons, Be Free" scenario, and that scene where Seven of Nine yelled
at the crowd that was waiting for her at her aunt's house.
Good points:
But! The relevance of the book's plot involving the Holostrike and the
Virus was remarkable. I remember coming across the term "enemy
combatants" in the novel and just couldn't believe it. The
similatrities were striking between the book's storyline and the current
situation in the US regarding the "War on Terror" and I LOVED IT!
I kept wondering why the TV series and movies were unable to capture the
sense of commentary on current events the way this book did (and the
various TV series USED to do). I currently read three Trek book series
(the VOY & DS9 relaunches and New Frontier) and can't figure out why the
books are so good and lately, the TV and movies have been so sub par.
