For a very different take on vampires, try
" Bloodsucking Fiends: A Love Story" by Christopher Moore

Well written and funny. Set in modern times.

Not only that, but Moore has yet to write a bad book, and his early books
already are collectible (i.e. they sell for more than cover.)

Lost Souls, her first novel. After it she swore off writing
about vampires, describing her characters as being like
"bratty little brothers I've finally gotten rid of." She
has, however, subsequently edited a couple of vampire
fiction anthologies, Love in Vein and Love in Vein II.
