In my opinion, for what it's worth, you should read the books in the order
they were written. So start with the Foundation trilogy and the first two
robot novels. At the time he wrote those they were unconnected. As far as I
know Asimov didn't start "linking" the two series until the 1980s. So, for
example, it's fun to read "Robots and Empire" knowing that things are
leading to the Foundation.
I suppose it's a bit like Attack of the Clones when Obi-Wan says to Anakin
"You're going to be the death of me."
