Hey, guys, I've got a question.. I'm fan of the X-Men, but, due to a
low budget, I haven't been able to keep up with the comics in years.
Anyway, managed to dip back into the pool on occasion when I
discovered that Wolverine is now an Avenger.

Huh??

Er.. okay, I've been out for awhile, and I don't normally read non X
titls, but last I heard, the Avengers had a strick "No Killing"
policy. In fact, in the Thunderbolts comic series, Hawkeye made
Mach-1 turn himself in because he had killed an evil scientist years
back.

So, why would they accept him as an Avenger?

Now, my friends seem to think it's just a cynical attempt to boost
sales of the Avengers by putting a popular character in the book, and,
I can't help but think they might be right. But from a STORY
perspective, how/why did they do it?

Your friends are right about the real reason for Wolverine, AND
Spiderman, now being in the Avengers...the in-story reason given was
basically that it was a darker world now and they needed someone who
would do what the rest wouldn't...I didn't buy it but Marvel doesn't
worry about their stories making sense anymore.

That said, anyone who had been away from comics for a while and took a
look at the Avengers books now wouldn't even recognize them...the
Avengers team that actually ACTS like Avengers (New Avengers) only has
one traditional Avenger (Hawkeye) on the team (and he's pretending not
to be Hawkeye)...and the other Avengers team (Mighty Avengers) that
actually LOOKS like Avengers (mostly made up of traditional team
members) acts like Fascists...there really aren't any Avengers
anymore.

Oh, and, although he is on the New Avengers, Wolverine is still an
X-Man...and he's about to be forced onto yet another team as well (a
new X-Force)...all because you're friends are right about the
reasoning involved...Marvel has really been whoring it up in the last
few years.

Well, I doubt that's why they'd recruit Spiderman, I mean, that guy
wouldn't even kill Carnage, despite him being an unredeemable mass
murderer. Or did they change too?

Wow.. reminds of a gag I saw on this internet cartoon paroding the
X-Men.

Cyclops is talking and goes, "Okay, everyone Jean has turned evil, so
we're just going to have to kill her... again. As usual, we will
split up into teams. Team A will consist of myself, Emma, Colussus
(who are is apparently back from the dead. Beast and Wolverine.

"Team B will consist of Havoc, Polaris, the other Zorn, Iceman and
Wolverine.

"Team C will consist of Storm, Psylocke, Bishop, Nightcrawler,
Jubilee, who won't do or say anything, and Wolverine."

Wolverine, "Hey, wait just a darn minute!"

It's pretty funny, if you want to you, can see at
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/219810

Speaking of X-Factor, who's on that team? Last I was heard, the comic
had been changed to Mutant X with some wackyass plotline about Havoc
being blasted into the future (X-Men 2099 terrority maybe?)

So, yeah, been away a bit, the latest thing i've read so far was the
House of M series, which I managed to pick up in trade paperback at
the library. Also been reading the Ultimate X-Men series, but that's
a whole different post.

Aynway, thanks for the catch up!

Wow, you have been gone a long time. That series ended a long time ago.
A few years ago, there was a Madrox limited series that established
Jamie Madrox as a private investigator in Mutant Town - also called
District X by police. Mutant Town is located somewhere in the Lower
East Side of Manhattan and, as you might guess, was full of mutants.
Jamie specialized in mutant cases and had help from Strong Guy and
Wolfsbane.

Now we get sidetracked into something to explain the cast. The short of
it is that the Scarlet Witch went nuts and depowered almost every mutant
on the planet (figures cited are usually 90%, but it's too low because
there were millions prior and only a few hundred after). As you might
suspect, that left Mutant Town pretty much devoid of mutants.

What had been XXX Investigations became X-Factor Investigations. In
addition to Guido and Rahne, Jamie also hired Rictor (depowered), Siryn,
and M (from Generation X). A young girl named Layla Miller also hangs
around with them and she's a powerful precog. She has an agenda that
isn't entirely clear and will do anything at all to see it come about.

Recently, the X-Men and affiliated groups have sought out the first
mutant born since the Scarlet Witch went crazy. (Mutants were no longer
being born at this point.) Wolfsbane seems to be switching teams.
We're not sure who will be part of X-Factor anymore but I think the
changes are going to be minimal.

It's well worth the read if you're interested in tracking down the TPBs.
Peter David wrote the Madrox LS and is writing X-Factor now. He does
an excellent job with characterization.

To be fair, there was a spot where after he joined the X-Men, he did
mostly vanish from the other X-books. Well, not his own. And not
Astonishing, but that book is in its own Whedon-verse when it comes
to publishing.

But he wasn't constantly appearing in the others at the time.

It's actually a paraphrase parody of a real scene in one of the core books
(Uncanny, I think) when Scott was setting up the then-current teams.

Mutant X had Havok in an alternate present reality.

No...he wasn't in every issue...just every OTHER issue...and every
issue of Astonishing...and every issue of New Avengers (even though,
to date, he hasn't made any significant contribution to the team or
book)...and every issue his own two ongoing series (+ the various
Wolverine mini series going at any given moment)...and his involvement
with New Avengers had him appearing in a load of Spiderman books
too...it was/is pathetic.

No, the New Avengers team came together by happenstance (like the
original Avengers) to deal with a specific threat (a prison break, in
this case)...Spidey just happened to be there so he made the
team...Wolverine was a later addition as Cap had been a later addition
to the original team.

There was actually a real scene like that in one of the x-books a
while back...at the time, Wolverine was a regular member of all three
X-Men teams and New Avengers (ridiculous, I know)...Cyclops was
setting up the rosters for the new teams and Wolverine made some
comment about not being able to be everywhere at once...not that
anything came of it.
