True, which means you've gone from "modern" commercial shipping, to
"tramp freighter serving the back of beyond" even if it used to be the
equivalent of France. Civil Wars, on this scale. open up all sorts of cans
of worms. There you are, a ordinary merchant, hauling "ordinary cargo"
suddenly being challenged by the a ship claiming to be from the "Legitimate
/ Provisional / Revolutionary / Restored Government of Inner Outer
Mudball", and you are told stand to for inspection. Then told that your
cargo is contraband, or you are supplying Traitors, or "the Wrong Side" in
general. You're lucky, you just get impounded for a while, then the cargo
confiscated, and you are sent on your way "with a warning". Bad news is
that "commerce raiders" are interdicting this system, and you're in the
wrong place at the wrong time. And nobody knows what happened to your ship
and shipment.
Or you arrive at a system, only to discover they no longer have need
for your cargo, all such uses having been declared redundant, reactionary,
excessive, or counter revolutionary.
Or there is nobody able to offload.
The other side is that Planet X, which could still use your cargo,
can't afford to order any, as the shipment of components they needed
haven't arrived from Mudball. Just as well, the economy tanked due to War
jitters, and all available resources have gone off to The War. Unless, of
course, you are willing to take a check drawn on the Last Nationalized Bank
of Freedonia ...
That's the other side of the economic chaos I'm talking about. As the
web of commerce inside the League is disturbed by secession, fragmenting
and any civil/regional wars, there will be less commerce to go outside the
League. Think in terms of the Silesian Confederation, writ large.
Yeah, there will always be room for blockade runners 'naughty men
slipping round the edges". But they are also as likely to be bringing in
luxuries as supplies. High markup items to make the risks worthwhile.

Actually, no. Remember that the incentive for piracy is to take the
goods--finances, not military conquest.
So long as your escort force is powerful enough to make it uneconomic
to go after the cargo it's safe.
So long as it's clear that the escort is powerful enough to inflict
such damage there's not going to be any battle. >> Stay informed about: War with the Solarian League? |

I'm glad to know that but historical pirates were willing to fight if they
thought they could win. On occasion they even raided ports and in the case
of civil war some of those fleets might have pure military goals on their
mind.
I think DW did say something like that but I think we also have cases where
various and sundry beings fired anyway. >> Stay informed about: War with the Solarian League? |

Kind of difficult, considering the usual situation. By the time a
Merchy realizes they're being pursued, the other ship is "too close". And
can you really unload a freighter into space that easily? I'm thinking
these things are more like modern container ships, except everything is
"inside" and below decks.
And then there is the small detail that cargo ships are better laid out
for hauling the loot home, than even empty 'pod-naught.

Wasn't that the business that Bachfisch and company were running
in Silesia all those years?
It's one thing to hate pirates, but it's a pretty good business
to hate pirates and to be very good at killing them.

Bachfisch was running a "delivery guaranteed" operation (and most
likely charging a premium), but I doubt he was boasting of being able to
take on pirates and win. He was after all, still just a merchant vessel,
even if it may have started life as naval auxiliary.

But in the old days pirates wouldn't lose anything but crew so long as
they won. Thus they would fight any battle they could win.

They don't land. I'm not even sure all compartments are airtight. They might
be able to open up a huge section of hull and use gravity control or even
magnitism to empty that compartment in seconds. That most or all of the
cargo is in containers shouldn't make it any harder to do.
A simple observation here is that if they dumped the cargo the power to mass
ratio is going to go sky high.
A full cargo ship is slow. An empty one under full power ought to be able to
run like a scalded cat.

IIRC, this was mentioned in one of the books, and the freighter was
worth much more than the pirate ship, if they had a buyer lined up. Of
course, the freight was worth a lot, too. >> Stay informed about: War with the Solarian League? |

fire was the big killer of wooden ships not cannonballs. to sink a
ship you need to hit it below the waterline and that isn't the easiest
thing to do with a blackpowder cannon. damage above the waterline
other than masts was readily repairable using onboard resources which
isn't gonna be the case with modern warships much less starships. >> Stay informed about: War with the Solarian League? |

Wood is pretty cheap, and ship repairs -- if the ship is not a total
loss -- are relatively simple, if time-consuming. Masts, spars,
sails, and cordage are somewhat more difficult to come by, but your
prize will probably have something you can use once you take it.

I meant on things like raids--crew is replaceable. Hit the town! >> Stay informed about: War with the Solarian League? |

Actually, not all that difficult. You fight from the windward side,
and aim for the hull. His ship will be heeled over a bit, raising what
would be below the waterline to where it could be hit. If memory serves,
this as the preferred French Strategy, while the RN chose to "aim high" and
take out the masts & rigging, thus capturing the hulls.

A demasted ship was dead in the water, and rigging new masts was going
to take a lot of time, and could still leave you in need of a tow.
