Post subject: Waverley Novels query
Archived from groups: rec>collecting>books (more info?)

I obtained a set of four volumes of the Waverley Novels (Sir Walter
Scott) that has me somewhat puzzled. It was published by Collier, New
York (not Peter Fenelon Collier). The boards are a rather dark brown (is
this the same as "burgundy"?)

The contents of the four volumes are as listed:

Volume I: Waverley; Guy Mannering; The Antiquary
Volume II: Ivanhoe; The Heart of Mid-Lothian;
Old Mortality; The Black Dwarf
Volume III: Peveril of the Peak; Redgauntlet; The Betrothed
Volume IV: Rob Roy; A Legend of Montrose;
The Bride of Lammermoor; The Monastery

In Volume I, Waverley, there's a "Notice to Abbotsford Edition" dated
January 13th, 1842, followed by a facsimile reproduction of a note dated
"1st January 1829, Abbotsford", and then the "Advertisement to edition
1829" (also dated "Abbotsford, January 1829").

There is no indication of how many volumes there were, originally, and
the date is unclear.

Searching on ABE I found the following entries which appear to refer to
the same:

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=231291390
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=195644058
http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=195644056
"No date, but probably 1890s to 1900s."

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=196530500
"Only date on gift inscription of 1887."

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=174636980
"NY Collier Publishers [1890]. G+/NONE. Good+ HB only-Ex-Library-not the
standard marking Pages are browning and brittle from age,; 4to; 701
pages. Illustrated by Illustrated. First Edition."

http://dogbert.abebooks.com/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=222645340
"Complete set in gilt decorated brown cloth. Undated, but Victorian era."

The following appears to be the content of four additional volumes in
the set:

Waverley Novels: The Abbott; Kenilworth; The Pirate: Volume V

Waverley Novels, Volume VI: The Fortunes of Nigel; Quentin Durward; St.
Ronan's Well

Waverley Novels, Volume VII: The Fair Maid of Perth; Anne of Geierstein;
The Surgeon's Daughter; Castle Dangerous

Waverley Novels, Volume VIII: The Talisman; The Two Drovers; My Aunt
Margaret's Mirror; Death of the Laird's Jock; Woodstock; Count Robert of
Paris

I searched elsewhere but couldn't find more precise information. I'd
appreciate any further info, and/or confirmation that the full set had
eight volumes, and its dating to ca. 1890.

Thanks. Smile

Ohio State Library has a set (Collier, 189-?): http://tinyurl.com/r966.
Eight volumes would appear to be correct.
