My Great Tolkien Read-Fest of 2007/2008 has reached HOME Vol XII, and
some of the material on the Preface and Appendices indicate that the
Shire was, at the time it was given to the Hobbits, a Royal Hunting
Preserve. And, one of the conditions of the gift was that the King (of
Arnor) could hunt three times a year in the Shire.
So, perhaps the Kings of Arnor hunted wild boars -- in the Shire!
And perhaps King Elessar, in declaring the Shire off-limits to all Big
Men, was alienating this right.

When Frodo is stabbed with a spear in Moria, Aragorn carries him away.
When Frodo says he is alright, Aragorn exclaims:
`Well,' said Aragorn, `I can only say that hobbits are made of a
stuff so tough that I have never met the like of it. Had I known,
I would have spoken softer in the Inn at Bree! That spear-thrust
would have skewered a wild boar! '
So, it would appear that there were wild boars in Middle-Earth. >> Stay informed about: Were There Any Wild Boars in Middle-earth? |

From the tale of kings of Rohan ---
2804-64 13. Folca. He was a great hunter, but he vowed to chase no wild
beast while there was an Orc left in Rohan. When the last orc-hold was
found and destroyed, he went to hunt the great boar of Everhold in the
Firien Wood. He slew the boar but died of the tusk-wounds that it gave him.

You know, I had a vague feeling there was something like that somewhere in
the books. Especially the name Everhold rings a bell.

Well, if I had speld it correctly it woult presumably have rung a clearer
bell. It's "Everholt". Raven, you dribbling imbecile!

RUNTS research suggests that in the elder days, it was the wild boars
who did the hunting.
wild boars were actually the dominant non-balrog race in the 1st age,
but of course all the history got rewritten by the elves and their
human stooges. >> Stay informed about: Were There Any Wild Boars in Middle-earth? |
