This just arrived in the mail today, and it is an incredibly
attractive book. Jason Van Hollander's striking decorative
cover--silver against dark blue--removes any doubts I once had about
the absence of dust-wrappers for this series. Please keep them coming,
Jeremy.

Jim, mine arrived today too, but I confess I found it butt-ugly. Jason Van
Hollander's few finely drawn illustrations look really great inside the
book, where they are printed in black on white. But in silver foil on a
(very) simulated leather style blue binding, it just looks terrible.

I haven't ordered BOATS yet but looking over the table of contents I
must confess that I'm hesitating a bit (I probably wouldn't be if the
print run were in the hundreds though). RE Captain Gault: Are there
any weird elements in this cycle of tales? Nautical adventure for its
own sake is not quite my cup of tea -- no more than, say, Hodgson's
take on physical fitness.

Paul M. (who now has an embarrassing number of [cheap] editions of HOUSE
ON THE BORDERLAND -- over-compensation for not being able to find a copy
initially years ago; same for THE KING IN YELLOW)<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I like the look of the silver on blue. Real leather would have been
nice, but I would not have been able to afford that edition anyway.

Jim-- for one, I wasn't expecting it to be without dust-jacket. Secondly,
when I first saw the illustration of the cover (others can see it at
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.nightshadebooks.com/hodgson1.html" target="_blank">http://www.nightshadebooks.com/hodgson1.html</a> ) I presumed it was the
dust-jacket, and I thought: "Hmmm. Not what I would hve expected to see on
Hodgson, but it has possibilities." But the book itself seemed diappointing
in its physical make-up because there is so much silver that it all becomes
a blur, and glares under the light. And then when you see what is a very
similar illustration printed in black and white on the title, it's striking,
and makes the binding seem so disappointing.

I suppose that if you like Franklin Library bindings (I don't), you'll like
this one. But to me it seems like a K-mart version of a Franklin Library
book. Sorry, but that's my reaction.

I'm only familiar with 'Glen Carrig.' Even though this was coming out I
bought the Gollancz paperbook of the Arkham edition just for 'old
times.' I'll be getting this new one anyway as soon as it arrives at my
favorite SF fantasy bookstore.
