I just installed a wireless card in our old computer. We got it back
from my daughter and son-in-law. It originally came with WinME. They had
troubles with it and their friend installed WinXP Pro w/SP2.
Since it now sees the internet, it of course went and found the last 200
bazillion updates, including Windoze Genuine Advantage.
If one has a less than licensed version of WinXP, what does WGA do to you?
Will one of those 200 BZ updates cost me?
Should I just go back to WinME (horrors!!)?
My son, who paid for the wireless card, will be using this computer and
does not want Ubuntu Linux (which is what I would go for if it were for
my sole use).

A little research online shows that if I get a bona fide upgrade copy of
WinXP Home it only would cost US$100, or US$200 for Professional.
Ouch.

You can refuse to instal that precise update, so I would say: Install
XP, install _security_ updates, but refuse "genuine advantage",
"authentication whatever", ...
And be mighty careful with the windows Xp you buy: since Vista came out,
part of them have been "converted" to vista and are not valid any more,
except that if you buy to a private seller, you have no guarantee at all :/
And do not even think of vista: if your comp runs ME... it will fail at
vista.

WinXP Pro is already on there, but I do not have the disc for it. I do
have the CD for WinME (somewhere). I can still buy WinXP through Newegg
or Staples online. I agree, I doubt the older computer would be good
enough to run Vista in any of its flavors (or incantations?).

Asuming your hotmail email is working, look in there for an email from
Talashar (at) gmail (dot) com
there will be certain instructions, and feel free to email me for further
explanations. I just don't
feel like sharing this sort of information with the whole of usenet.

Considering that Windoze General Advantage varified Ubuntu as a genuine
copy of Windoze, I'm not sure Aaron had much to worry about, anyway. *GGG*

I have seen with my own eyes the WGA say that a legal copy of windows xp
was in fact fake, and it took long (and expensive) calls to microsoft to set
things right.
