I'm selling Junius on ebay at the moment and a number of my regular
customers have e-mailed me with their thoughts regarding the author of these
letters. As some of you lot seem quite well read I was wondering if you had
a definitive answer. I have done some research and all there seems to be is
theories and conjecture.

Best regards
Diane

latest doing the rounds in the dusty halls of The Cambridge Literary
Department is the possibility that George III wrote the letters himself in
an attempt to distract the public from the dire economic state of the
nation. I think it's now called political spin.

I think theories and conjecture are all there is. Circumstantial evidence
points to Sir Philip Francis, but:
_________________________________________________________________
"Joseph Parkes, author with Herman Merivale of the Memoirs of Sir Philip
Francis (1867), gives a list of more than forty persons who had been
supposed to be Junius. They are:

"Edmund Burke, Lord George Sackville, Lord Chatham, Colonel Barr, Hugh
Macaulay Boyd, Dr Butler, John Wilkes, Lord Chesterfield, Henry Flood,
~William Burke, Gibbon, W. E. Hamilton, Charles Lloyd, Charles Lee (general
in the American War of Independence), John. Roberts, George Grenville, James
Grenville, Lord Temple, Duke of Portland, William Greatrakes, Richard
Glover, Sir William Jones, James Hollis, Laughlin Maclean, Philip
Rosenhagen, Home Tooke, John Kent, Henry Grattan, Daniel Wray, Horace
Walpole, Alexander Wedderburn (Lord Loughborough), Dunning (Lord Ashburton),
Lieut.-General Sir R. Rich, Dr Philip Francis, a junto or committee of
writers who used a common name, Dc Lolme, Mrs Catherine Macaulay (173391),
Sir Philip Francis, Lord Littleton, Wolfram Cornwall and Gov. Thomas
Pownall."

For a good online account of the evidence that Francis was certainly
involved with the letters, if not their actual author, see
