Also, how is it that there are 2 new mutants? Wasn't the whole point
of Endangered Species & Messiah Complex to drive home just how dire
the situation is for mutants now that the X-Men and their known
enemies are effectively the only ones left? If they really want us to
care that the current students are the last generation of X-Men, they
might not want to immediately introduce hitherto unknown mutants as
members of the very last team ever.

The title sounds just like Young Avengers except that they'd be recycling
existing characters here. >> Stay informed about: Young X-Men |

According to Gyrich in Avengers: The Initiative, there are actually
close to 300 mutants. Of course, since those remaining mutants are
constantly killing each other, I imagine that number dropped. Also, the
number of mutants listed in The 198 Files fell well short of the 198
mark. That left a lot of room for new mutants. And since a new mutant
was just born, I would suppose Wanda's spell wasn't entirely effective -
which we already knew since some mutants existed anyway. >> Stay informed about: Young X-Men |

Oh, I know they've intentionally left themselves plenty of slop space
in the numbers to introduce new characters. And I fully expected them
to take advantage of that. I just thought the timing was a little
odd. It's a book about the last group of students who will ever
become X-Men, being launched out of an event that highlighted the lack
of new mutants, and it stars...two brand new X-Men!
That said, this is just the pitch. I'm still willing to wait and see
how the new characters are introduced. If their introduction is
handled well, they are interesting characters & they add something to
the team dynamic, I'm willing to go along with it.

Yeah, what is it with those New X-Men kids? They've had about 60 issues to
make an impression on me, and I still can't figure them out. Contrast it
with the original New Mutants and even Generation X and it's a really poor
showing.

I each his own...I've generally enjoyed the New X-Men series (and the
New Mutants series that preceded it)...I like most of the characters
(many of them increasingly so as the series progressed) and, even
though I could have done without all the unnecessary character death
from Yost's run, I'll miss the book...I'd certainly give them the edge
over Generation X (I like some of those characters but that book never
really appealed to me at all). >> Stay informed about: Young X-Men |

I'd take the New X-Men kids over what's being presented in YX any day.
Surge and Hellion in particular are ones I'd keep around. >> Stay informed about: Young X-Men |

Oh, ok. I thought that group was pictured in the promos. Honestly, that's
how much my mind has taken in about those guys - they're so homogenous and
unmemorable.

I'll agree with you about DeFillipis and Weir's issues, but not Kyle
and Yost's. NEW X-MEN under the latter team has been 10 times the book
NEW MUTANTS was in any two-year period, imo, and lightyears above
GENERATION X (none of whom I've ever been slightly interested in).
Typically, I'm not a fan of teens doing teen stuff. I didn't even like
this when I was a teen.
As for the cast of YOUNG X-MEN, Dust and Rockslide are two of my
favourites from the cast. However, much of my love for these two
characters stems from their interactions with the rest of NEW X-MEN,
especially in the case of Rockslide being without Anole. Blindfold
irritates me, due to the simple fact that she's a precog. Hopefully,
Guggenheim can make her interesting, but I'm skeptical.
I really hope none of the other kids are going into limbo, as all 27
of the surviving students are more enjoyable than any of the adults at
the moment, imo.
I'm not pleased to see two new guys, especially after learning one of
them has the power to gain whatever ability he tattoos himself with.
Have we run out of interesting powers to the point we just give
characters the power of "whatever?" >> Stay informed about: Young X-Men |

That's just ludicrous. New X-Men under Kyle and Yost has been mostly
a "let's see how badly we can abuse these characters" exercise, with very
shallow plots. There have been a few moments that I enjoyed, but by and
large, the book has been all flash and no substance.
The first 50 or so issues of New Mutants, on the other hand, stand
as some of the best X-Men books ever published, better even than the
Uncanny issues that Claremont wrote concurrently. The run with Bill
Sienkiewicz is a particular high point. (Yes, it did go down the toilet
after Claremont left.)
