That's okay. Some of us procrastinators are proud of the fact that It
Is Not Yet March, and the cards did actually go out.

How went your move? Any entertaining tales of the "fun" of
moving and tracking small children simultaneously? :>

The children have gotten quite a bit bigger since you last saw them, so
they were not a problem The drive up went as smoothly as one can
expect with two children and a puppy. lots of stops, but not too much
complaining.
Various missing items have been turning up in strange places. I did know
that the movers would pack anything, so I emptied and covered all the
trash cans before they came. I had forgotten, however, about how
efficient they are at filling up boxes. If there was empty space in a
box, something went into it. We found the kids' night lights and an
alarm clock in a box that was otherwise accurately labeled as "Kitchen
Books." We found the hardware for our son's loft bed in a box with
garden supplies and swimsuits. My alarm clock has just been rescued
today (10 days after arrival) from the front seat of my husband's car.
Oh, and our missing tortoise has finally reappeared. He has been living
in my in-laws' yard in San Diego for the last four years. Every time we
visited, we saw him walking around the property. We saw him there every
day during our Christmas visit, but on the day we wanted to put him in a
crate for moving day, he was nowhere to be found. He just reappeared in
his usual sleeping spot yesterday!

<g> I do that, too. But since I'm the one doing the wacky
placement, I can usually remember and find the misplaced items.
Though it once took me six months after a move to find the screws
to put my big shelving together.
At least the random packing encourages you to unpack everything
promptly. (Looking for silver lining.)

His usual sleeping spot in San Diego, I presume, for maximum
inconvenience. :>

Oh yeah, when Jesse moved out here from Indiana, the movers packed
trash, curtain rods, pried a mirror off a back of a door that came with
the apartment, etc. They really go to extremes to make sure nothing is
left behind.

I've gone to great lengths not to do things like that- all hardware for
putting things together goes into a ziploc bag, and that bag gets stuck
in the file case that goes in the car with us (it also holds all our
important documents) Of course, we (I) do all the packing, and then the
movers do the rest- and earn every penny for carrying all those darn
boxes of books down 2 flights and then back up 2 flights, usually. *G*
Last time, I was very proud that they didn't have to box one single
thing. The only thing we lost, too, was the power cable to Jesse's
computer. Which was very strange because every OTHER cable was there. We
couldn't find a single one, despite knowing we had spares, so he finally
"borrowed" one from work until we bought a new one. Then we did a big
attic organization this summer, and found something like 7 of the
blasted things. *grumble*

The things that *I* packed are properly labeled and kept together, and I
would have taped the bed hardware to the bed. However, we had a bunch of
friends who helped us with the first move (San Diego house to apartment,
and the stuff that didn't fit to my parents' garage and a storage unit),
and that didn't happen.
One thing we HAVE learned; as soon as the packing process commences, I
keep a box or caddy stocked with tools (hammer, two kinds of
screwdrivers, IKEA wrenches in two sizes, and a pair of pliers) and
packing supplies (packing tape, masking tape, scissors, labels,
sharpies, etc.) That travels with me, and anyone who removes something
without returning it has to answer to me!

12th box of books... lightweight. When we moved into our house,
16 years and a few 1000 books ago, our friends who helped informed
us that we had better stay put, and the next time we moved, we'd
better call the movers.

I believe, in that case, we'd done something excessively clever,
and put the screws in an "obvious" location. When I found them,
months later, I remember thinking I was an idiot for having lost
them in the first place, because they were in a spot I ought to
have looked... or something.
In my most recent move, screws for furniture went into plastic
bags that I taped *to* the relevant furniture. That worked.

The one time I hired professional movers, it was for exclusively
moving the furniture. I moved *everything* else (including the
books), but needed them to move a half-dozen pieces I couldn't.
They did break my TV... For the last couple moves, I've had my
brother. He is not a perfect human, but he is a 6+ foot tall guy
with no back troubles. :> He, me, and my favorite pal, the hand
trolley, could move everything I own. Just barely. (But I bought
a refridgerator last summer, so that may no longer be true.)
I admit, at about the 12th box of books I was re-thinking my
decision not to hire movers! Why couldn't I collect toothpicks,
or something else lightweight?
Ok, time to make my spicy sausage and red bean soup....

Good heavens! 12 boxes wasn't the total number, just the number
at which I deeply regretted my reading hobby. :>
Actually, 12 may have been the total number of book boxes. I
bagged most of the paperbacks -- they are just about as tall as a
brown paper bag is wide. And I stashed a bunch of books in my
office before the move. Carried them to the new home after the move.
I tried to dodge carrying all my books, all in one week. :>

When we moved 4 years ago, we had 99% of everything packed up before
the movers arrived. At box 70-something of books, I lost count <G>.
It was worth every penny I paid the movers - particularly since we
went from a 3-story house to a ranch home. Their legs and backs were
a whole lot younger than mine!

I lost count a lot faster than that. :>

The third floor thing would be the make or break issue. I was
going ground floor to ground floor -- much easier. :>
Next time I move I may actually break down and buy a doggie cage.
In spite of tying him to furniture, when furniture with legs was
available, my dog still managed to get underneath some of the
largest items as they were being moved. Came perilously close to
dropping a washing machine on him. Anyone else have that trouble?
(Or should I just have been harder-hearted and locked him in a
room? But he was so *worried* by all the strange activity.)

Our fur children went to the kitty hotel in the morning before the
movers arrived and I picked them up the next day after the movers had
left. They were *not* impressed but it was a lot easier than worrying
about them getting out and vanishing.
