Ex-Servicemen 'too often end up homeless'
Too many servicemen are still finding themselves homeless after
leaving the armed forces, a Croydon charity leader has warned.
Jad Adams, chairman of Nightwatch, said Government proposals to
strengthen the vagrancy laws were no solution to the problem either.
Mr Adams was speaking at the annual meeting of the charity, which
cares for homeless people in Croydon, at teh Norfolk House Hotel,
London Road.
He said 'As military activity is again prominent in the national
news it is depressing to reflect how many of our clients are former
servicemen. All whi have been speak with pride of their service in
such conflicts as the Falklands and the First Gulf War
"The Government is now talking of reinvigorating the vagrancy laws
which were actually brought in after the Napoleonic Wars to police the
thousands of demobilised servicemen who had fought those wars. When
the wars were won, there was little further interest in the soldiers
except to condemn them as a nuisance.
