Post subject: Which book should I keep?
Archived from groups: rec>collecting>books (more info?)

Hello all,

I have a bit of a dilemma that I'd like to have you all's input on: I have two
copies of Guy Gavriel Kay's _Tigana_, not a particularly valuable book, but one
that I admire. Both copies are first US editions, and I paid the same for both
($1). One is what I suppose is VG--nothing wrong with it, but it's been read a
few times, the pages open easily with none of that "new book" stiffness and are
maybe a little darker than the other copy (not dirty or yellowed,
just...off-white overall). The other copy is bright, white, and tight,
BUT...it has a remainder mark, a red line about 2-3 inches long on the under
side of the page block. Like I said, this is not an especially collectible
book, but I like it and I'd like to have the best copy I can get. I know that
it really boils down to my own personal preference, but I'd like to know what
others in the group think about this issue: when the choice is between NF with
a remainder, and VG with no remainder, which one trumps the other?

Thanks,
Rachel Wright

Keep the non-remainder-marked copy.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

I agree. Aside from the permanance of a remainder mark, the other
copy - while not damaged in any appreciable way - is "comfortable;" it
will feel just as good in the hand, but it's been read and that's what
books are for. Leave the pristine stuff to the stamp and comic
collectors.
