Looking for book name

Trying to remember name of book....hopefully this description will
ring a bell with somebody out there.

It is primarily about a mother/son, in Great Britain or Ireland. They
are victims of an IRA bomb blast in a parking garage ( in Dublin, I
think ). The son is deafened by the accident. They book is about
their relationship as they grow older as well as the son's marriage
and the mothers relationship with her very good friend. The son
became a deck-builder in London.
