Made the mistake of wandering over to Amazon the other night - there
seems to be a lot of books due out shortly. Haven't seen discussion
on these, so figured I'd pull them together. Descriptions from
Firebird's site, dates from Amazon start those winter holiday of
choice shopping lists, I guess:
THE FAIRY GODMOTHER (no data on Firebird) - Harlequin Books, January
2004 [Oh, no, say it ain't so! HARLEQUIN? Surely NOT a pure
romance!]
CHARMED DESTINIES (no data on Firebird) with Rachel Lee, Catherine
Asaro. Silouette, November 2003 Paperback. No description on Amazon
either.
SUN IN GLORY (definitely short story collection, paperback) - DAW
December 2003 - this must be the one with Talia becoming a Priestess
of the Sun.
EXILES VALOR - DAW November 2003 Hardcover - nothing on Firebird.
Assume it's the next chapter in our favorite Karsite exile.
MAD MAUDLIN with Rosemary Edgehill. More musical mayhem with Bard Eric
Banyon in the wilds of New York City---tracking the creature the
children of the streets call "Bloody Mary." - AVAILABLE NOW (Baen
Books August 1 release date)
OUTSTRETCHED SHADOW - with James Mallory (Firebird has this as Shadow
Mountain) -is the first book of the new Fantasy Trilogy with James
Mallory not Rosemary Edghill. Sorry about the mistake, Rosemary is
working with Misty on the Bedlam Bards series. This has all the High
Fantasy trimmings and should appeal to the Robert Jordan audience.
[Bruce's comment - the blurb on Amazon sounds like another interesting
universe for us to enjoy] TOR - October 2003 Hardcover
THIS ROUGH MAGIC - with Eric Flint, Dave Freer, James Baen
The sequel to SHADOW OF THE LION; Maria is married, and Benito is not
taking it well; he hopes to forget her on an expedition to the island
of Corfu with Erik and Manfred....too bad she's already there. And so
is a power even more ancient than the Lion of Venice.... Baen
Hardcover December 2003
BRAIN SHIPS - with Anne McAfferey, Margaret Ball, James Baen - no
description on Amazon or Firebird (maybe a compilation of the Ship Who
series?) Baen Hardcover November 1 2003
STONED SOULS with Josepha Sherman: a SERRATED Edge book. Conal and
Dottie from Fairgrove take a break in Florida while Conal sorts out
his troubles stemming from the loss of his twin. Unfortunately,
trouble wants to follow--- Release date January 2005 (?!?!) >> Stay informed about: New books by Lackey?! |

On Mon, 14 Jul 2003 16:29:23 -0400, Bruce Glassford stomped
through my brain with:
>SUN IN GLORY (definitely short story collection, paperback) - DAW
>December 2003 - this must be the one with Talia becoming a Priestess
>of the Sun.
Hrm...more short stories. Any indication as to whether it's
going to be a "fan fic" type collection such as Sword of Ice was
or is it all going to be Misty's works?
>EXILES VALOR - DAW November 2003 Hardcover - nothing on Firebird.
>Assume it's the next chapter in our favorite Karsite exile.
Drool....can't wait...
>OUTSTRETCHED SHADOW - with James Mallory (Firebird has this as Shadow

Ooooo....sounds interesting. My curiousity is up, now...

That one I will definitely get. I would LOVE to have a copy of
those books, especially in an all-in-one compendium.

I can't wait for these two! Silhouettes, IIRC, is doing one
volume fantasy and another s/f. And if we buy enough copies, they
will buy more from Misty.

Jesse read the first 6 chapters on Baen, and said that it's good,
but we're going to wait until it goes into paperback.

'Tis understandable. Misty is branching into the fantasy romance
field, not least because she does romantic fantasy well and because
fantasy romances sell so much better than "straight" fantasy. The
Silhouette is three stories in one.

Not to mention that the pay is better for Romance than SF/F.

I believe there is a concerted movement on the part of
sci-fi/fantasy publishers to try to lure some of those
free-spending romance readers over the fence. Lois McMaster
Bujold is also contributing to a sci-fi/romance anthology.
I bet there are more authors doing the same.
FAQ updated now. I feel better.

I'd bet more on it being an anthology of Brain Ship novellas by Lackey, Ball,
and Baen, playing in McCaffrrey's universe.

Silhouette is another Romance line; don't recall if it is an official subset of
Harlequin... be interesting to look these up!

Even better...looking forward to that even more since novella's,
being the shorter stories, have a tendency to have a more sharply
defined plotline...

I recently started reading the series. In fact, I picked up City
Who Fought at the used book store this weekend, and started it
last night. Don't ask me what time I crawled into bed. (I
think books should come with warning labels!!!!)

Wasn't there some crossover in McCaffrey's "Crystal Line"? I
think a Brain/Brawn ship was Killashandra's transport in that
book...

Yes, there are several cameo's in the series by B&B ships. (I've
read that series recently, too)

Maybe you don't haunt the Romance or Series Romance section in your
bookstore; my late MIL adored those things as "mind candy" (We donated over
3,000 of them to the Salvation Army, most to a seniors' home they run out
here.) Silhouette is another romance publisher similar to Harlequin.
FYI, I don't either, but lately I've been glancing over the regular romance
section for authors I know of, such as Rosemary Edgehill.

I don't haunt, but romance is frequently back-to-back
next to the sci-fi/fantasy section around here. So I
do see the stuff on the New Romances shelf. (Line up
a row of new books, and I'll read the titles. I'm
nutty that way.) So I should have seen!
I'm not as nutty as your MIL, though. Three THOUSAND?
Wowzers.

I don't think she writes novels published in the romance
genre anymore; at least, she didn't list anything recent
on her www site last time I looked at it. Finding
out-of-publication romances can be very tough, unless
they're by a big author. (Nora Roberts comes to mind.)
A couple of the fantasy authors I like, like R. Edgehill,
got their starts in that genre, so I have looked for
their old books.
