Frank Budgen's James Joyce and the Making of Ulysses is absolutely
essential, since it contains most of Joyce's own discussions of the
book.
Another fantastic book is Clive Hart and Leo Knuth's Topographical
Guide to James Joyce's Ulysses, complete with maps of the routes of
characters (e.g. pointing out that while Mulligan and Haines are
waiting for Stephen in the Ship, he's only a few doors away in another
pub, Mooney's, buying drinks for the newspaper men!)
Ellmann's biography of Joyce is great, but his Ulysses on the Liffey
is all nonsense. The only good thing in it is the Linati schema, a
different schema from the one given to Gilbert.
