I'm looking at two David Langford books, Different Kinds of Darkness and
Earthdoom (with John Grant). Also Shadow by K J Parker, which I think
I've heard villagers mention before. Now, should I buy them, is the
question.

Yes!
Anything by Langford is excellent value. _Different Kinds of Darkness_
is a short story, so I guess that's an anthology unless he's expanded
it; Earthdoom is a few years old and a parody of disaster novels and
films. (_Many_ of them.) John Grant, a.k.a. Thog the Mighty, is also
worth looking out for...
I haven't yet read Shadow, but I very much enjoyed _The Colours in
the Steel_ and its sequels. Well, if "enjoyed" is quite the right word.
A perfect remedy when you're feeling too happy and optimistic about
human nature.

I can't opine about the Langford books, since I've never read anything
of his. But I quite enjoy reading K.J. Parker. I even managed to buy
two copies of Shadow, quite inadvertently. I think the author is a
good addition to anyone's collection.

The K J Parker, yes, Langford I've never really read, so I can't offer
an informed opinion.
While the very nearly OT subject of books is in the air, can I ask
villagers who they might suggest in the same vein as Kurt Vonnegut?
I've been reading a lot of his lately (only really broken up by the
arrival of the new Michael Marshall Smith novel) but sooner or later
I'm going to run out, so I'd appreciate some ideas.

Righto. It's the acquisition of all these extra bookshelves that is going
to my head. Need to fill them. After which of course, the books will pile
up again and I'll need new walls again. Sigh.

A need with which we all can identify. Unfortunately, I am largely
out of walls, time to cull the collection again. Loud pitiful sigh.

Ahem? You mean time to extend your house, surely... I mean, you
couldn't cull poor innocent books...

Actually I do mean that horrible fate. I've reached a point in life
where I try to keep only those titles that I want to re-read at some
point. Of course, with my profession comes a certain stiffening of
the spine---the fact of life remains, they publish more books than I
have room to keep, in my house or on the stacks at work.
But don't worry about books being left homeless. Those removed from
the home collection get 1) offered to friends 2) get a chance a the
used book store or lastly get given to the "Friends of the Library".
The Friends at my building run a perpertual used book sale which nets
reasonable sums which go to fund many library programs. SummerQuest
and the annual Concert being some of the most notable recipients of
their bounty.
