It's funny. Everyone complains her writing is bad recently, yet they run out to
buy her books the exact day they come out. If her writing is so bad, according
to some people, why are the exact same people buying her books? Just because
you bought one book from an author doesn't mean you HAVE to buy every book they
publish after that.

I fall into this category, actually. I guess the reason I still buy her new
books is because no author has ever moved me like Anne. So I keep hoping for
that same feeling, or better, perhaps.
And I don't think her latest books are horrible or anything, just not up to
par.
I've also heard that fans of authors tend to stay loyal forever, the same is
not true of film idols or music stars.
Be well.

This is probably why she's giving up on the Vampires. People demand things from
her characters which she doesn't want to write about.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ --> >> Stay informed about: rice;s new books.. what do you think about it ? |

I was talking about this with a work colleague (fellow English teacher) and
I was saying that her writing style really bugs me and I find it terrible
but at the same time I love the characters and the stories. Although, if
she'd used the word "egregious" one more time I was going to scream. It was
as though she'd only just discovered the word, thought it was perfect, and
kept using it over and over. I was using her as an example of descriptive
writing gone horribly wrong.
I have found in her more recent books that she latches onto one idea and
beats it to death, eg, Catholicism (and I am Catholic, so I don't have a
problem with the concept generally). In Blackwood Farm, for example, she
beats you over the head with religious imagery.
I still love Lestat and love reading about him though
Oh, and for the record, I wait until the books are discounted

No offense, but that's still stupid for someone who hates her style. You could
just go to the library. I'm sorry but people sound so moronic. I hate this
about her work, I hate that about her work, HATE HATE HATE almost everything
about her work, yet I'm buying it when it comes out on paperback. It's ashame
how people waste money when there are little kids in other countries who have
no money.
I hope I get published one day. I'm going to work FOREVER on on book. Wait till
I have a fan base. Then do a series where the rest is cr@p, because as proven
by this group, just because one person buys one book by an author they have to
buy the rest. Even if they really didn't like the first books. Authors are
smart...

Most of her books I really enjoyed. The only one I really didn't enjoy was
Violin, which was given to me as a gift, and I eventually battled through
when I had nothing else to read.
I like (most of) her stories, I like her characters, but I don't like
particular things about her writing, such as the way she latches onto a
single idea and beats you over the head with it. Her writing is self
indulgent, and at times, frustrating, but I enjoy reading it, else I
wouldn't bother, and I certainly wouldn't be bothered reading this
newsgroup.
Just because something's not a great work of literature, doesn't mean you
shouldn't pay money for it. Oh, and it was discounted, but still hard cover.
You can buy a CD without liking every song on it.
My library doesn't have Blackwood Farm, or any Anne Rice books, because it's
also a school library, and they are not deemed appropriate reading for the
students, so if I want to read it, I have to buy it.
Not everyone has equal access to library facilities.

It takes months to get any new books in my local libraries. Even though
I've been disappointed with her books over the last few yrs, I'm addicted to
reading them. I guess it's like drugs, you keep going for that first "high"
that you remember. Actually, I did enjoy Violen and Black. Farm and if I
hadn't have run out and got it, I might have been misled by the bad opinions
of others. We all have our own opinions. Actually, my addiction is wearing
off. I now only read the posts here to see if a new book has come out.

What in the world does starving children in other countries have to do with
buying books you are disppointed in??? I'd say absolutely nothing! Any of
us who want to donate to charity do so and that's our business. Actually,
the money not spent on her book would most likely be spent on another book.
That's like saying, "Eat your food. Children are starving in Africa." Does
not compute.
