I've got my daughter reading them in published order as her first time
through. I generally think that is the best approach for a first time
reader of any author. It's the way the original series was published and it
gives a good introduction a series and the author's style and development.

I disagree. I think it is best to read the chronologically. I am really
hoping that the "director's cuts" will remove the annoying juxtaposition
between the writing styles of The Bastard Prince and Deryni Rising...

I tend to agree with Mak. Or at least I would read the Chronicles of
Deryni first- DR/DC/HD after that you can either stick with Kelson
and company and read the 4 other books or jump back to Camber and his
time.

I started with Deryni Checkmate - it was St Torin's that got me hooked, then
High Deryni, and only after that did I go back and find out what happened
first. After that I read them as they came out. For me, Kelson's time is
"Now" and Camber's time is "Before", but now I've read them all, I'm quite
happy to go for either time as a sequence.

hi,
to be honest, i would start out with the kelson books and then go back to
the camber books. I tried to read the camber books first, and i was so
bored...but, after reading the kelson books, i went back and read the camber
books. And they made a better read, because i was learning everything that
Kelson and Co wanted to know about Camber and Co...strange isn't it?

No, it's not. I agree 100%. The Kelson books ask a lot of questions
about the Camber times.

I used to go to a bookstore at the train station almost every day when I
worked in Birmingham (UK) during the early 80's, so the owner knew my taste
pretty well!

He introduced me to KK's books from the Camber series first, and then DR /
DC / HD, so this is the order that I have always read them - .

I found this worked for me as I enjoyed having the knowledge about Camber's
period in history and following the later characters' journey of discovery,
though I know what you all mean about the discrepancy in writing style. I
love the Camber series despite the atrocities and sorrow, in fact possibly
because of it - they are so beautifully written, it is impossible to read
them and not feel moved.

For some reason KK's books seemed to disappear from UK bookstores in the
mid-late 80's and I didn't manage to get my hands on copies of THG / TBP /
KJY until about 5 years ago, so these got missed out of the re-reading loop
for a long time.

These days I have to buy my KK fixes from Amazon.com - and pay for shipping
from the States (which can be quite costly for books!)

As I also live in the UK, I can sympathise. In the 80's Katherine had a UK
[publisher, but the last book they brought out was THG. At the time they
were publishing some pretty weird covers, presumably trying to attract a
wider audience. (Evaine suddenly acquired black hair!). Then they stopped.
I only managed to get TBP while on holiday in Florida. Our son, who was born
the following year, is called Rhys Michael, but that is another story Smile

However, that last two I have got from amazon.co.uk, which saves on
shipping, and usually gets them here in 3 days.

Thanks Steve - that's worth knowing! I just went straight to Amazon.com
thinking .co.uk may not be able to get them. Silly me......... Wink<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

You guys are lucky. Here in Bermuda we deal with the Bermuda postal system and

I would recommend starting with the Deryni Chronicles or the Camber trilogy.
I read the Camber trilogy first.

The winter I turned 15, one of the Camber books was the featured selection in
the Science Fiction Book Club (which, like KK's UK publisher stopped publishing
her books after Harrowing). My mom bought me the trilogy for either my
birthday or Christmas. I was hooked. When Bishop's Heir was published a
couple years later, the SFBC offered the 3-in-1 edition of Deyrni Chronicles.
After that, I eagerly awaited each new book while Katherine wrote.

Oh! I named my youngest son Rhys Michael too! Smile He is three years old and
quite a charmer! I have to keep rescuing my books from him because he loves
to look at the dust jackets, and he seems to be sure that if he opens the
Histories of King Kelson books enough pictures will magically appear
("Mummy--where did the pictures go?) *giggle*

Hope you enjoy your Rhys as much as I do mine. How frequently do you have
to correct people's assumptions about how his name is spelled?
