I like the Game of Thrones series too. I read somewhere that it was
originally planned as a trilogy and after the first one became a best seller,
his editor asked him to stretch it into four books. When the second book sold
well, Martin was asked to make it six books. Martin had already outlined it
and had to created some extra subplots and cultures, etc. to stretch it out.
I also read that something similar happened with Kate Elliot's fantasy series,
except she kind of got lost in the subplots and the original plot got buried in
them. I haven't even bought #5 because I struggled to finish #4...just found
it long and confusing. But I'm sure others have enjoyed it.
Most recently, I've been recommending Robin Hobb's Assassin, Live Ship, and
Fool trilogies.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
