Hey people. I was just thinking about when I first started reading Rice. All of
her books that I've read so far are very thought provaking. They make you like
you know think outside of the box. I was thinking about how few books and
authors can do that. Seems, I can't find any more. I did find one, though.
Steinbeck. He wrote two of the books I was required to read over the summer for
school. Anyone have any suggestions? Just books you read that changed your
thoughts about stuff and life. I like those kinds of books. Any suggestions are
welcome.

Try Storm Constantine. I enjoyed her books "Wraeththu" and "Stalking
Tender Prey". Try Ray Bradbury. "From the Dust Returned". And dare I
mention this woman's name in this newsgroup, Poppy Z Brite.

Hmmm.. I'll check those out. Thanks for your suggestion. Actually, a lot of

Nope, but I rarely read nonfiction by choice. Was it good? I usually find
nonfiction dull, but there always exceptions to the norm.

Apart from AR, I also read an IMMENSE amount of Terry Pratchett - and i
would consider him to be quite life-changing . Storm Constantine is
awesome, as well, especially if you can get your hands on Hermitec (sp??).
There is also Paul Coelho (The Alchemist).
enjoy

This summer one of the books I read was The DaVinci Code. While it's
certainly not great literature, I thought it was pretty good and it
peaked my interest in lots of different topics to read about more in
depth, i.e., Holy Grail, Knights Templar, Crusades, etc. Anybody else
out there read this one, and if so, what did you think?

I read it and thought it was the best book I've read in a long time. As you
say, it is not great literature, but it was just so much fun, and the author
had a contest on his website that involved solving codes and using material
from the book to complete the test. I hadn't seen anything like that
before.

That's one of the things I really liked, the book used a lot of history and
real places and Dan Brown (author) made it all come together for an exciting
plot and great read. A lot of the things in the book were not new to people
who have studied da Vinci but it still made for interesting readiing. I did
a lot more research after reading this one.
I have to admit, I had not read any of his other books, I stumbled across
this one while doing some research on da Vinci. I just started reading
"Angels & Demons."
Anyhow, I really did like this book.

I read The Da Vinci Code and loved it. I couldn't stop turning the pages.
True, Dan Brown's prose are not as lush/brilliant as Rice's but his plots are
hard to beat. I also enjoyed reading about the Sacred Feminine.
This book could make a kick-ass movie.

This from Dan Brown's website:
"Columbia Pictures has secured the much sought after motion picture rights
to Dan Brown's bestselling thriller The Da Vinci Code, it was announced
today (June 27, 2003) by Amy Pascal, Chairman of Columbia Pictures, and John
Calley, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. "
<snip>
"Viewing The Da Vinci Code and the adventures of Professor Langdon as the
basis for a potential franchise, Columbia also acquired the right to produce
Angels and Demons, and future Langdon properties."

If you are interested in some background in the whole Mary
Magdeline/Jesus/Grail theme, the book Holy Blood Holy Grail covers all
this and I am pretty sure Dan Brown read it about a million times
before writing The DaVinci Code. Pretty fascinating stuff. I agreee,
TDC would be a great movie!

One of the things that I love about AR's books are the sense of
history. I thoroughly enjoyed Pandora, Blood and Gold, etc., that went
back to ancient history and revealed how people in those times lived,
died, etc. I think Anne has a wonderful way of making those times live
for me. I was wondering if anybody had read anything (fiction) by
other authors that take place, say in biblical times, ancient Rome,
etc., that are as interesting and just plain as cool as Rice's books,
that they would recommend?
