Hi,

I was wondering if any of you guys know of any other books that follow
the same theme of fantasy (elves, dwarves, etc) and are written as well
as Feist?

I have read Lord of the Rings and the first two books in the Riftwar
series (about to read the third.) And i'm completely hooked.

I bought "The Wheel of Time", but later heard that there are no elves in
it, though it is a very good book. I know I'm bein picky, but there's
somehing about the elves taht I like. So, if any of you guys know of
any other good fantasy books that include the elven race, plz lemme know!

Thanks all.

I can recommend Katherine Kerr's Deverry series. They consist of 3
series of 4 books, with 11 already out. I read the Feist books as my
first real entry into fantasy, and loved them. I then devoured the
REF/Wurts trilogy, and expanded to some of her (Janni Wurts) other
books. I also read some of Eddings stuff but found it lightweight
compared to Feist. However, one day at a local 'Trash and Treasure'
I picked up a dogeared copy of Daggerspell and was hooked. The books
are engaging and well written, but complex with many threads, both
past and present. It requires some effort and concentration to read,
or you will lose the plot, so's to speak.

Kerr's books in order:

Daggerspell
Darkspell
Dawnspell
Dragonspell

A Time of Exile
A Time of Omens
A Time of War
A Time of Justice

The Red Wyvern
The Black Raven
The Fire Dragon
The Gold Falcon (in progress - etp end 2004)

It seems the last book will be too long for a single book
and will be split.

The Black Stone.

The American titles may be different. The middle 4 are aka
The Days of X and Y, eg Days of Blood and Fire.

go to <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.deverry.com" target="_blank">http://www.deverry.com</a> to find out more.

I don't remember the specific details of many of the books I've read
since first I read Tolkien but some writers that come to mind that
I've enjoyed -which may have contained elves (or may not have, such
being the sad state of my memory)- were

Barbara Hambly "The Time of the Dark" and some others
Ursula K. LeGuin "Earthsea" which had a different 'flavor' but I
really loved
Tim Powers "The Drawing of the Dark" and some others
Stephen R Donaldson -the Thomas Covenant stuff, may have been others
Terry Brooks The 'Shannara' stuff

lots more but that's what comes to mind quickly ....

Terry Brooks has elves. Stephen Donaldson and Ursula K LeGuin don't.
At least her Earthsea stuff doesn't. Stephen Donaldson's Thomas
Covenant has elvish sort of humans I guess.

Try Terry Brooks Shannara Series.

Sword of Shannara
Elfstones of Shannara
Wishsong of Shannara.

Then there is a few more following those, but Sword and Elfstones were my
two favorites.<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->

Lots of good recommendations by others to which I would add Anne
McCaffery Dragon Series (No Elves but lots of Dragons) and a series if
you can find them of 3 books called The Horselords Dragonlord
Demonlord can't remember who wrote them published in the 80's not
related to the Forgotton Realms novels again no elves but well worth
reading if you can find them

Big mistake! the series starts well enough but decends into a tedious
morass after about the 3rd book we are now on Book 10 and you get 500+
pages of tedium for about 10 mins of action

They're by Peter Moorwood and the fourth in the series is called
"Warlords Domain". I think it's safe to say that they're out of print
though. Long out of print probably. He's also written two more that
occur some hundreds of years earlier. The first is called "Grey Lady"
and I forget the second. Possibly "Widow Maker". I haven't been able
to find that one though. For all I know there may not even be a copy
of it in all Australia. They may all be over in the UK.

Peter Moorwood also has a series set in like Russia where all the
fables are real. Baba Yaga's in it. Talking horses. Good fun read.

Cheers Bud

It was really bugging me who wrote them. I did have a set of all four
(couldn't remember the last one at all) I will do a booksearch for the
other titles but I can't ever remember seeing them in Waterstones at
any time recently so maybe second hand only.
