There are several programs to do this. One in the UK is here:
http://www.smsprice.co.uk/cgi-bin/home.cgi

Another US type has a dedicated little electronic gadget. You enter the
ISBN and it gives you roughly the same information as the
UK program does with a cell phone. I could not find their web page - I
forgot the name long ago - but as I recall you bought the machine and also
paid a monthly fee.

OK, thanks for answering my questions.

Actually, no. I can't afford stuff like cell phones and iPods and
Blackberries and don't bother reading about most discretionary
consumer electronics. I figure that, no matter how good it seems,
it will be obsolete in a couple of years and something else will
be made to sound like a necessity. Dribs and drabs of information
get to me anyway, e.g. news about copyright issues and iPods, but
for the most part they are not part of my world. Generally speaking,
I don't acquire consumer electronics except as gifts. For me, the
fifth of a sawbuck is usually the limit of my impulse buying. But it
is much more rewarding than most others: a movie is over in a couple
of hours, but a book can entertain for days, months or even years,
apart from whatever genuine utility it might have. Books are the
best deal I know of.

Since you are wriggling around under a fake name,
I can't tell the readers with absolute certainty about
the last time I toasted you to a whining, squealing
crisp for your ignorance and/or insolence (likely both!).
Most of our readers no doubt realize that your churlish
fantasy bears the stench of a posting by a vindictive
"spankard" (flame war loser). Cheers.

I'm just curious whether you saw enough of the screen to verify that
they weren't just looking books up to see their summaries and possibly
what reviewers had said of them...?
