Erik Kjeldgaard ha scrito:
" Does anyone know if Bukowski ever got involved in Buddhism? His
second wife was a Buddhist, and he had a Buddhist wedding and funeral.
The recent
posthumous collections have incorporated Buddhist themes in their
titles
(The Flash of Thunder Behind the Mountain, Slouching Toward Nirvana).
My
guess is Bukowski didn't pick the titles, but maybe his wife's hand is
in
it. Or maybe the titles are coming from the work. Dunno, haven't read
them
yet. Anyone have any insight whether this ever became a significant
part of his
life? "

Buk was NEVER involved in that 'lotus blossom, the
sound-of-one-hand-clapping' clap-trap. In his dying days his concubine,
a former flower-child and hippy from a well-to-do Philadelphia MAIN
LINE family, cajoled him into performing some pseudo-Buddhist rituals
in the hope of ridding him of cancer.
Buk went along because nothing else was working and he was willing and
desperate enough to try. It was merely a last-ditch act of a dying old
man.
The woman you refer to was not a Buddhist. She was a flake who grasped
at whatever trendy NEW AGE junk was floating about. She was an earlier
devotee of some Indian Guru, whose 'philosophy' was some sort of
Hinduism mixed in with the mumbo-jumbo that appealed to bored,
well-heeled Angelinos seeking a 'higher truth'.
His wedding and funeral were scripted by the above-mentioned flake.
His recent publishings were under the editorial 'guidance' of his
literary executor, and it's not John Martin (see above).
There is nothing REMOTELY Buddhist about our Bukster!
Buk was always a true CIGAR smoker.
I have never been in a golf cart.
