A while back I bought the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition. I really
enjoyed playing them and thought, "Wow, Myst, Riven, and Exile in one
box on three discs."
Wellll, it only runs in 640 x 480 video mode. My current computer runs
at 600 x 800 minimum no lower (default VGA driver, but that is another
problem). My computer is too advanced to play 10 year old games.
Gripe session over.

Downloaded and installed the latest drivers to my video card (a first
time experience for me!) Hopefully now the Myst games will automagically
change to the correct resolution, and even better, return to the rez I
started at when done. I have found the Advanced button, from which I can
set it manually to 640 x 480, messing up my desktop upon the return to
'normal'.
But that is tomorrow, which is actually later today (it is 2:50 AM and I
rose at 5:30 AM yesterday - thank you bureaucrats for the holiday).

Yes ... agreed ... I tried to play Planescape: Torment on DH's laptop
in the hospital. The graphics were ok when the game ran, but the cut
scenes between levels would freeze it up. Not sure if the laptop is
too advanced, or not enough <chuckle>.

I downloaded all the game patches, but didn't try to mess with DH's
laptop. He told me the video card was pretty awful so maybe it
wouldn't have mattered.

That is one of the reasons I prefer consoles to computers for gaming
(especially since I love the type called "RPG", that is much more
present on consoles than on computers). But I must admit I also
sometimes play very old games on the system 9 of my Apple comp'
Anyway, you should be able to find "slowing" applications especially to
help using the memory / capacity that are "too much" for the game...

Technically I am still playing Myst IV: Revelation. I have Myst V and
Myst URU still in their shrink wrap.
I do not spend as much time playing as I used to (RL blues?). I spend
more time telling my grandchildren that I don't like kids - as I play
with them at the park, taking walks, reading books, feeding them sugar
before sending them home, etc. I'm still wondering how long it takes one
of them tell me what one of my kids said: "That's OK Dad, kids don't
like you either."
Anywho, I tried Riven again today, even after manually setting the
screen resolution to 640 x 480 all I got was a brief dark screen, a few
seconds, then it went back to the desktop.
Now I am thinking of digging out my old discs and see if they work. Or
dig out the old discs and AMD K-5 powered computer and use it like I did
for Myst and Riven originally.

Here is my report on the 3 DVDs:
Myst: Kinda sorta worked, then died.
Riven: Still no luck. If I find my CDs I can use my Win98 laptop, I did
before. Maybe I will try these DVDs on the laptop. They require Win98/XP
with a PII/233, the laptop has Win 98 with a PII/333 (and of course a
DVD drive.)
Exile: Works great! Gee, remembering the clues from the first time let
me solve a lot of puzzles on the first world *very* quickly. I am ready
to link to other worlds in about 3 hours; I loaded it just after my last
post at 8:11PM, it is 11:00 PM now. The first time took about 1 week.

Just to let everyone know, there is a thriving community of
"retro-computing" types for the old TI-99/4A system. some of us are
gamers dealing with the likes of Parsec and TI-Invaders and others are
actually creating new stuff. Oh, BTW, there are new expansion parts for
it as well like an IDE card and a USB one. I'm waiting for the
ethernet.
