I honestly can't remember how much I may have posted here about what's
been going on in my life; I've been cut orf from computers quite a lot,
and generally fraught. My father had a stroke on 28th November and
lost speech and the ability to swallow, and my brother (from London) and
I (from Bristol) have been going over and staying in Pa's house turn and
turn about, visiting him every day in hospital and trying to make sense
of his slightly dyslexic and extremely elliptical communications on a
pad of paper. The doctors looked grave and the speech therapist talked
in terms of months not weeks and they were talking about putting a tube
directly into his stomach because feeding through a tube down one's nose
is bad news after a time...

This past week he started to swallow efficiently enough for them to be
able to discontinue the tube-feeding (on Tuesday), and when I came away
for my Christmas elsewhere (my brother has friends in Oxford he can
spend Christmas with) on Friday evening my father said "Happy Christmas"
as I left. OK, most people wouldn't have known that's what he was
saying, but I've been doing the speech exercises with him all week and
*I* knew. And he'd also told me to "hang them on the radiator" quite
clearly apart from not being able to do "th", when I said I still had
some damp clothes from the washing I'd done. He's going to get his
speech back.

I got my best Christmas present a couple of days early.

Merry Christmas to all in the Village, and here's to a Happy New Year!

I must confess to a certain ignorance of draconic customs, but wasn't
previously aware that wrapping paper came printed with such festive
phrases as "Danger!" or "Oxidising Agent - Keep Away From Flame" or
variations on that theme. I've not seen presents wrapped with the Space
Ministry crest before, either. Apart from the ashtray in my office, of
course, but nobody's...

But nobody's pinched that yet.

The traditional way is "Warehouse fire", isn't it? Or might that just
make it all worse?

That would probably involve replacing the East Wing for the sake of
veracity, and since it's grade 2* listed it would be far more trouble
than it's worth. Then there's the smoke and noise to consider. It's an
awful lot of fuss.

I'll send the gamekeepers out on a 20 mile tab and then list it as Lost
On Exercise. They don't check these things anyway.
