The best books of the 20th century, Gaza, are The Effective Executive by
Peter Drucker, Is Sex Necessary by EB White and James Thurber, and How
To Lie With Statistics by Darrell Huff. The latter two have cartoons.

Best thing I've read in God knows how long is the Philip Pullman
trilogy, Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
Don't believe anyone who tells you they're children's books.
Other really good stuff (well-written rather than simply entertaining):
Sebastian Faulks: Birdsong
Peter Hoeg: Miss Smilla's Feeling For Snow
David Guterson: Snow Falling On Cedars
Richard Bach: Jonathan Livingston Seagull
JRR Tolkein: The Lord Of The Rings
Paul Gallico: Snow Goose
Well, I thought they were good anyway. But I also think Terry
Pratchett and Douglas Adams are brilliant. Can I add "The Hitchhiker's
Guide To The Galaxy" to that list? >> Stay informed about: let's challenge time magazine's best book list with our own. |

Was that just a first impression, or did you read the whole novel? >> Stay informed about: let's challenge time magazine's best book list with our own. |

Not really a personal favorite, though I did enjoy reading it. (It
certainly is much better than Atlas Shrugged - I don't think I could
read that 75 page diatribe again. And how could that harangue serve to
seduce the heroine anyways?) But I do think it is the best example of
a certain form of literature, the coldly, realistic attempt at heroism.
In many ways, this style of writing, of which Rand is probably the
best example, reminds me of the cold, monolithic photographic images
that both Nazis and Communists liked to use.
