My cousin just told me bought a hand lettered copy (L) of the codex on
e-bay this weekend. She's very excited, but I'm concerned because she
said it was a 10-day posting and there were no other bids. I've seen
printed copies go for 2 and 3 times what my cousin paid for hers. Does
anybody have any information about this copy or why there were no other
bids placed? I would really appreciate hearing from anyone.

Tough questions all:
Can't tell you about the book. I saw it listed on ebay but as I
recall it was listed for $1000 and that is way too high for my pocket
book. Same may apply for others. For others, the holidays are only
two months away and may be saving for such. Also some could be saving
to go to Darkover the end of Nov.

Also there is the fact that the book is no longer cannon not that that
would dim interest in wanting to read the book, would love to get my
hands on one to read but it could dim interest in wanting to pay a lot
of money to own a copy.

Hi Jerry-
Thanks for the reply. My cousin and I have both read and enjoyed the
Deryni books since we found Deryni Rising in our school library in 7th
grade. We both have all the books (I think!) and have read them many
times. We have both wanted a chance to have (or at least see) a copy of
the Codex for a long time.

It sounds like she ended up paying way too much for her copy. However,
I'm sure we'll both enjoy it a great deal (especially me, since I didnt
have to put out any funds).
Since this is one of the 26 lettered copies, do you think it might have
more value as a collector's piece? (That's me talking. I don't think she
will want to try to sell it anytime soon since she's waited so long to get
her hands on a copy!)

I've never posted or chatted before, so I'm not up on what's going on in
the Deryni universe. Why is the Codex no longer considered canon and when
did this happen? Is there anything out there to replace it? I've never
been to a con before either. Where is Darkover being held and what is
involved?

Sorry- I'm yakking too much. I'll stop now....

Thanks, Melissa. I'll tell Robin. She just called me a few minutes ago
and told me she got the package. We're going to open it up tonite. I did
a bit of looking on the net on Darkover. It sounds like a great time. I
can't make it this year; but I will definitely plan on it for 2005.

Can anyone tell me more about why/when the Codex became "non-canon" and if
there was any follow- up available out there. Also, someone told me there
were some fan-written story collections out there?

Not a problem, you will find us a friendly group here. Chats are the
same. I haven't been able to get up on the chat room in a while but
Sunday afternoons/early evenings are a good time to be there as
occasionally Katherine will make an appearance and you can sometimes
get tidbits on what she is up to writing wise or house construction
wise. She is a very nice person who makes the people new to the chat
feel welcome.

Codex value is as with anything, in the eye of the owner. So only
your sister can say if she payed too much. Katherine and Robert
Reginald, from what I understand, had a parting of the ways so that
kind of put the codex in a nice info but no longer official. Still
would be a lot of neat info to read. Nothing to replace it, at least
not yet. There is an atlas in work with most of the info coming from
the books directly- with some input from Katherine. Not sure when it
will appear.

Katherine is working, slowly-way too slowly- on the second book of the
Childe Morgan series. There has also been some word that she and Ms
Harris are submitting a proposal for a new Adept book though this one
will take place in the late 1800's.

Darkover happens Thanksgiving weekend up in the Baltimore area.
Katherine attends and a group descends on her and they appear to have
a good time. Haven't been myself-too far and wrong time of the year.
There will be more on it as the tiem draws near.

Welcome to the group and don't be afraid to post queries or comments.

Jele,

I'd say your cousin should hold onto her Codex, whatever it's actual
monetary value, because there won't be any more published. It's already a
rarity. Copies of the Codex have gone for over $1,000.00 in the past.I
believe the highest price was over $2,000.00. So in a certain sense, your
cousin got a bargain. I think the lettered copies are no different from the
numbered ones, but there are only 526 bound printed copies of the Codex in
existence. So tell her to enjoy it, and not spill anything on it. =o)

Darkover is held in Timmonium MD at the Hunt Valley Holiday Inn over
Thanksgiving Weekend each year. It runs from Friday Morning to Sunday
Noonish. Katherine is a regular guest each year. She's often on several
panels, and holds a reading of her latest work at some point during the
weekend. It's worth going to have a chance to meet her, as she is very warm
and friendly. Take some of your books if you go, as she usually has a
signing session on Saturday afternoons. In past years, fans have taken her
out to dinner on saturday night somewhere in Timmonium. If you go, seek out
Pat Nolan's Rampant Lion pub run out of her hotel room. It's a good place
to meet other Deryni fans.

There is a fanzine, The Deryni Archives, that is published annually. Katherine
sees and approves all of the stories there so that none of them are way WAY
off, although of course they are not canon.
There is a small zine called the Annales of King Kelson that is a sort of codex
for King Kelson's Bride. That is approved by Katherine. The Annales can be
obtained by writing to OldJessie.DeleteThis@hotmail.com.
By the way, Darkover is held at the Holiday Inn Timmonium, not the Hunt Valley
Inn, which is used by another con.

Whoops! Sorry, and thanks for the correction, Pat. For fanfic without having
to wait for the fanzine, there is a website called the bardsquill at
www.bardsquill.com. Lots of stories, there, some being posted in segments
while the authors complete them.

Everyone- thanks for the information. I'm going to look into the fanzine
this weekend.

My cousin Robin and I had a great time last night exploring her copy of
the Codex. She's very happy with it and that is all that really matters
in the end, of course.

We've never had anyone else to talk to about the books. This is fun!
Thanks for the warm welcome to the site!-- Je

Why wait till this weekend? Hi! I'm the editor of Deryni Archives the
Zine. And I'm currently working on #20, with high hopes for getting it
out at Darkover Con.

But here's the info for issue 19:

Deryni Archives the Zine
Issue 19

At 110 pages, Issue 19 is now ready to come to your home for your
reading pleasure!

Zine cost is $19.10 --in REPRINTS ($19.10 + $3.95 = $25.05)
Postage choices (US only– please email for outside of the US):
Express Mail (overnight) $17.85
Priority Mail/First Class (2 days) $3.95

Issue 19 has the features you’ve come to expect: “Progress
Report” by Katherine Kurtz, “Editorial” by Julianne Toomey-Kautz,
“Deryni Ink: Letters of Comment,” and “Our Contributors. ” This issue
also includes “Spring Fling in Rhemuth Logic Puzzle” by Kiri, ordering
information for the Deryni wall map by Ann Dupuis of Grey Ghost
Games/FUDGE Role Playing System, and for Annales Nuptiarum Kelsoni
Regis. We’re pleased to welcome back the wonderful artwork of Kathi
Spivey and Melissa Houle in this issue, as well.

“The Oak and the Swan: A Caeriessan Epithalamion” – lyrical poetry
about the great love between the two children of the founders of “Lost
Caeriesse” by Beverly Allen.

“Return Journey” by Susan Werner sends two old men, who were young
at the time of the sacking of St. Neot’s, back to the place of their
many memories.

“Deryni Night Before Christmas” by Mary Alice Kropp is an excellent
Deryni take on Clement Clark Moore’s classic Christmas poem.

“Hay is for Horses” by Katy Colby tells the story of one Mearan
widow’s reaction to her husband’s death at the hands of Donal Haldane.
How she protects her children from the King’s directives makes a
gripping story!

“Conversion of Life” by Samuel Wise is a story in two parts. In ‘A
Soldier’s Curse,’ two young men – little more than boys – meet on the
Mearan battlefield; one must consign the other to prison. When he is
much older, he seeks forgiveness from the other, who is now a priest.
In part two, ‘The Price of Faith,’ an old priest who is responsible for
the test of merasha at priestly ordinations must decide whether or not
to help Denis Arilan pass the ordeal. His actions are tempered by the
earlier part of the story.

“Balachan Math” by Sharon Henderson is a sweet and wonderful story
of Duncan McLain, at four years old, already impressing visiting
prelates. It’s also the story of his mother’s care and concern for her
Deryni son.

“Second Encounter” by Mary Alice Kropp gives us another look at the
mermaid. This time, Alaric Morgan gets to meet her and receives a
warning of piracy!

“Heart of a Healer” by C.H. Specht gives us the story of Analia,
who is good with animals and who comes to the attention of the Deryni
Duke of Corwyn as a potential Healer.

*blink* Codex isn't canon anymore? I have been gone a long time.
Anyone mind whacking me with the clue-by-four?

*weak smile* hi everyone, I'm trying to claw my way back onto the

Kristy,
Katherine and Robert had a falling out. As a result of that, she will not
be using anything from Codex that was not in her books, if I recall correctly.
There is a long story behind what happened and some of that may be in the
archieves, however, I do not know how to access those.

Why do I always seem to find out about these things by sticking my
